Throttle Body cleaning on 2005 Fx 35

You need:

5/16 socket

Carb cleaner

4) Clean TB with carb cleaner and a light brush (tooth brush)
5) Clean the intake since you got access

6) Clean the area where the gasket seat
7) Put back gasket and TB torq the 4 bolt in a clockwise patern to make sure the gasket seal. Don't forget to reconnect the TB wire.
8)Put back the intake duct
9) Start the engine and spray some carb cleaner one the TB gasket. Nothing should happen if the engine drop rpm thats mean the gasket don't seal right.
10) put back engine cover and Voila!

Mine was filthy last time I cleaned it and I didn't have to reprogram. I ended up doing it anyway a few days later, but it didn't make any difference. I also used a light cloth instead of a toothbrush, fwiw.

Here are some pics from the first time I cleaned it, after which I did the pedal dance calibrations...

Great write up.

A step or reminder you might want to add is to be careful not to drop the gasket when separating the TB from the upper plenum

you can def do a better job by removing the throttle body & it is the better way to do it if you have the time but it's not absolutely necessary, you can effectively clean it without removing it too, especially if your going to clean it every 20k miles or so, can be a 15 minute job

re-calibrating it becomes necessary only if you open the throttle & then let it snap closed on it's own spring pressure. letting it snap closed even a little can knock it out of calibration. there is a variable resistor connected to the throttle plate (tps sensor) & the computer is calibrated to it's precise resting position. letting it snap closed can change this precise calibrated resting position just a little... no damage done but the computer would then need to re learn it's exact resting position again... as long as you gently close it without it snapping closed you'll be fine & not have to relearn anything, simple as that really...

What did you clean the upper and lower plenium with? a rag and carb cleaner?

I used this:

and these:

for the upper and lower plenum as well as the TB. The TB cleaner does 80% of the work. Very little scrubbing is required.

I opted for disposable shop towels instead of a rag because they're cheap and my wife would have spontaneously combusted had I run motor oil soaked rags through our washer and dryer.

I dont know if the plenum will flow any better after the cleaning, but it's a lot purdier! Might as well do this too.

Not unless yours are damaged somehow. I've done it a few times and never needed new gaskets.

Thanks, lost a snap on socket right by the throttle body, i dont know where it fell, right under the intake tube and tb there is an openin by the plenum engine area , hopefully ill find it one day. Expensive snap on 10mm deep socket

I bet its sitting atop the front cross member. I lost one there while installing my headers. A couple weeks later I was removing my hfc's and found it.
