Stubby Antenna

I wonder how it will hold up in various weather conditions and if it even aids reception.

Good point jd.

Before I did the stubby changeover I tried a Mangowalk 3" rubber antenna. It was too wide at the base and did not look just right.
I also considered changing over to Mangowalk shark fin antenna, they are only $10. Here's a link to those antennas : http://www.mangowalk.com/index.php?category=Car%20Accessories
I never did get one though.

The vacuum caps can be found at pep boys and are a part number 47394 from VACU-TITE!. This package is a total of 4 caps that are 5/16" diameter. I believe that you could likely fit a 16mm long stainless steel M5 80 pitch screw with these caps instead of a 12mm as noted in this write-up. I'll swing back by my local ace h/w store to verify. I'm pretty sure the extra 4mm isn't going to do much in the way of better reception, but any little bit will help I suppose.

I see some mini stubby antennas (1.58") in ebay but the ebay pages do not list Infiniti as a compatible vehicle. However, I would expect one of the screws to fit.

It does look nice, but I am not terribly worried about FM reception and big difference between $5 and $65. A <3'' black aluminum piece that fits properly would be fine, just cannot tell which has the right diameter base visually.

Well I ordered the Mangowalk 1.5'' aluminum antenna.

Impressions: It's as good as any short/stubby antenna. Well built, comes with the right screw size, looks and fits properly with the taper at the base of the antenna to fit and look OE (the bottom ~1/2'' of the black portion is part of the OE piece). It's as if the standard mast was cut off just below the spiral. I wish it went down just a thread more to eliminate the gap/seam/joint entirely, but I am being picky. Easiest install next to valve stem caps, best $15 spent on a car (even more dramatic in person). Sure the shark fin is a even nicer, but I am okay with the $70 difference. I see the earlier Gen2s have an all black plastic antenna, so there the difference with the shark fin is even greater and may be worth it. Mine is at least painted, so it's halfway there already. Not sure when they started coming painted.
