Strut Bearing Broke again

So it seems to fit, huh?
I'm still knocking around. I haven't had a chance to get this done yet. Was hoping this week. I have the replacement bearings (old style) in hand. You think I should try the new ones. I would need to order those right away, or I can just install the same thing.

Any chance one of your control arms on the side in question is bent or damaged? The strut itself being misaligned (axially) even slightly would take those bearings out quick.

I really dont see how. Never taken any really big hits. Wife drives it really seldom, but ya never know.
Soonster, can you chime in on how it feels right now? I need to get this done, but I dont want to buy xtra parts if I dont need to, & I only want the car torn apart for the fix for as short a time as possible. I want to have everything ready

Sorry Dave, I tho I responded last night. I typed up something and must had shutdown the pc and not realzing I never submitted :tongue (2):. Anywho... I had not driving or seen the FX since Sunday evening. With the new plastic design installed, the sounds I usually get are GONE!.. I drive the same highways from NYC to BKLYN and it pulls more to the left side each time the steering wheel unattended. I'll have to do some more miles this Friday/Sat/Sun to get more feedback. I was abit worried like u dave, in trying this plastic design but overall, it doesnt feel any different. I would had done both side if I had both parts in place tho but guess an alignment job will re-correct the slight effect. Maybe that was all in my head, but the sound is def gone :smile (2):.

i get this knocking sound from the left side when i hit bumps, my stillen strut brace is on, bearing gone?

Very possible.

Try re-tightening all the Stillen Strut Brace bolts first. If that doesn't fix it, most likely the bearing is gone. They go out fast unfortunately.

oh ok, Do you guys tighten the bar bolts with force, or when you feel its tight you stop tightening it?

The repair manual said it should tighten to 35 ft lb. Is you "feel its tight" = 35 lb? You might want to jack the problem side up on jack stand and start inspects for wear & tear on the stabilizer link, outer tie rod, and lower ball joint

la fx35- if i recall stillen strut bar should be tightened to 25lbs.. also do i have to take the whole strut assembly off to change out the bearings?

It can't be just 25 lb, it is mounted onto the three bolts on the strut tower isn't it? If it is, 35 lb is the spec for those three nuts.

Yes, if indeed is your strut bearing was bad, you do need to take the entire strut/spring apart to replace the bearing and then make sure you get an alignment too. Most likely your alignment will be off. But before you went that far, I would check for plays in the outer tie rod, stabilizer link, and lower ball joint first.

I tore it down this weekend for the bearings. One, to put it lightly had failed, the other still intact. Put in the new plastic ones on both sides. Just to confirm, they do fit. Only time will tell if this is the correct application. So far, they feel normal. No alignment needed as in Soon's case, so best probably to change both out. Thump Thump gone, yay . . motor mounts are a separate issue, but they're ordered & on a truck.

...

Did you compare assemblies left to right? Anything missing, bent, damaged, mismatched, foul mouthed, or unruly in general? Any indication at all of why that one would fail so drastically? Sure looks like it was being squeezed too tightly or at a funny angle...

To the naked eye, vverything looks normal on the suspension. I think coilovers will be my next purchase if I get another fail on this,

& it may have had all those symptoms. If the bearings are bad, car will not feel right. Right now, any wobble from my car is coming from the bad mounts, but I'm sure the bearings also added to the feel of being crippled.

I replaced most of the suspension parts at 100k miles, and in hind sight, it only would have cost me a few hundred more to get coil overs. If you count labor, it would have been a wash, since the coil overs are plug and play with the springs already mounted for the front.

I just had no desire to go lower and like the KYB and H&R ride.

Just following up.
The new plastic bearing seems to function just fine. I replaced both & didnt notice any alignment issues. It should work for all '03-'08 FX's, although the dealer will say otherwise for any model with a manufacture date before 3/07.
Soon, I dont think it's related to you swap'ng out one side, but cant confirm.
I'll post status later, but so happy to be driving aggressive again. I've been in granny mode for a few months as I babied pretty much all the time with all those busted parts.

She smiled for the camera today

nice dave! and thanks for the update. I gotta make time for an alignment this month or so.

A little late to the party here, but could be a worn out sway bar link. Replaced 3 on various cars recently.

Reading this thread in advance of changing out my struts per MTN FX DIY thread. So what is the consensus? I have an '03 with 160K miles on it. Should I look for the old or new PN? I'll probably just go to the Nissan dealer and order by PN not application. TIA. I love this car, mine since new.

EDIT: Cruising eBay for 54325-8J000, looks like it's the same as the 02-06 Altima PN.
