Steering wheel shake fixed

Process of elimination. Since you're saying there are no shake at time, comes and goes. My guess is that the pump is weaken or the seals in the rack is weaken too. Do you notice if it shake more when the car is cold or short driving time? In another words, it drives fine comes up more when the car has been driven over an hour or so? What I'm trying to get to is if the shake goes away when things are heated up, and all the seal expand and keeping the right amount of pressure; therefore it voided out the shake? Just my speculations, after all!

very good info, the steering shake happens all the time when i speed 60-70 mph. The car behaves awkardly(looseness in the front end, car drifting to one side)all the time, sometimes sever wobble starts after i drive the car for 10mins or it happens from the start. Lately its been acting all the time.

When I was doing an oil change at the shop and noticed there was a glazed amount of oil where the bolt is.

So i cleaned it offf

Yesterday i did mu oil change again
I see oil glazed around the bolt again .

I think theres a very tiny leak not enough to drip but just to glaze around the bolt

Is this power steering oil or rack and pinion oil/ grease?

What would be the potential problem?

Mine has no real shake although one of my tire is bad

Thnx

Kudos to the original author,

After installing 25mm spacers, my shakes had gotten worse. Now it's all good. Also, my car used to drift to the left, now it drives straight. Go figure!

i had this problem too, mine was doing it allot. Ever since i started adjusting the rack bolt it stopped

Well... after procrastinating this mod for over a year, I finally did it today. Had to pick up a 24mm socket cause I realized I didnt have one.

I left the wheel on cause I didnt want to deal with 75 lbs. Had some trouble removing one of the rusted screws that held the plastic
splash guards... and ofcourse with my luck the screw broke off. So I just removed the other screw and was able to get enough clearance
by pushing it down to get at that magic nut. Did 1/4 turn first, didnt feel much of a difference so did another 1/4 turn.....
steering was much stiffer... felt alot more sporty and the car doesn't wobble going over small bumps anymore. 50% of the highway shimmy is also gone. The stiffness is on the higher end of my target... but the steering wheel does return back and I don't mind if for now, hopefully it doesnt get any stiffer in the winter or I'll have to turn it back a bit. Overall the trouble was definitily worth it... its almost like a coilover adjustment knob. :)

i think he did cause he started his statement with but ...

Nope.... No Typo. What I wrote is what I meant.
But I let it go Dracula.... cause I know you are talking from very bad experiences....
btw.... I wonder how tight two full turns feel? ...
well hopefully you get her fixed... almost sounds like a new rack and pinion assembly is required.

thanks you, two more turns will make ur sterring wheel feel really heavy and you wont be able to control ur steering, it would be off. Also this will damge the rack it puts too much tension and will wear ur rack prematurely

Another great find on IS, thanks guys! I'm going to try this cuz I have the shuddering, but only at 40-50mph and not all the time, usually only on the morning commute. I'll try it anyway as I'm going to work on the brakes today anyway.

And on a semi-related question. I had my dad's Toyota Sequoia for a week. When I started driving the FX again, the steering seemed heavier than the Sequoia. Any idea why that is?

I just finish reading the full 8 pages thread. I will express my the problem and see if someone experience the same thing.

got shaking for 90km/h, most of the day there's wing on the highway, with a side wind no shaking.
what i find unusual when i got my stering shaking if i brake pretty strong the shaking go worste for the time of the braking.

wheel have been balance, new front brake job done still same problem.

Sounds like your rotors might be warped. Did they change or cut the rotors when you had the brake job done? Also how long ago were your brakes and balancing done and what size tires and wheels are you running?

^ How are your rear brakes? And FWIW, adjusting the bolt on the steering rack does help some, but there are so many other things that affect it. I had a horrible shake at 60mph that got worse after putting on 22"s. Aligned the car, had the wheels balanced again, helped some. Tightened the bolt, helped some, but still there. Got new tires and the shake was virtually gone. As someone else said, the FX is really sensitive to any little change in the suspension. It's magnified with larger wheels/tires.

And for me, wheel spacers had zero effect on the shake. I've been trying out different sized spacers for a while and none of them did effected the steering wheel shake. This is with aftermarket 22"s and relatively aggressive offsets. With hub centric spacers, I don't see how they could do anything.

I had a terrible shaking during braking as well. I thought my rotors were warped. A couple weeks ago, I flushed the brakes of my G. I had some brake fluid left, so I flushed the fluid of the FX. While I was doing that, I tightened the bolt about 1/4 of a turn as well. I'm happy to report, I no longer have the shake during braking, but I still have some slight wobble at 55-65mph. I'm going to turn the bolt a little more when I have a chance.
