Runaway Prius

What do you mean by "mandate"? My Audi will not shift out of neutral without being completely stopped... It is fully "interlocked".

Shift lever regulation in the motor vehicle safety standards.

You are required to push the brake (and/or push the lever button depending on design) when shifting out of park and going from neutral to reverse. However, you should be able to move the shift lever from reverse or drive to neutral without having to push the button or brake.

While moving you should be able to slip the level from drive to neutral and back. It may not be recommended by the manufacturer but you should be able to do it.

Where did you get this info? The Transmission Shift Lever Sequence standard (from 1968) mandates the existence of "N" between "R" and "D" on an automatic gear selector. It says nothing of what you are talking about...

I was reading a recent issue of Car and Driver and they did some tests to see if the brakes on a car would stop it even if the throttle was wide open. The short answer is that even on a 500 hp Shelby, the brakes will stop the car with the throttle wide open. There is no reason a Prius couldn't be stopped.

It is incredibly fishy that since the recalls have started, the number of complaints seem to have exploded. We had one here where the lady drove her car through her neighbors house. She claimed that as soon as she started the car and started going down her driveway, it suddenly accelerated while she was on the brakes. Old people have been mistaking the gas pedal for the brake for decades, but now all of a sudden it's Toyota's fault.

So he was able to accurately diagnose the smell of burning brakes and was able to call 911 while doing 94mph on the freeway (without incident) for several minutes, but he didn't know to turn off his car or shift it into neutral? I don't buy it.
I also doubt a Prius is able to overdrive it's brakes in 1st gear, let alone at 90+mph.

There's a regulation somewhere. Saw it long time ago. I'll dig it up later. It's amazing how everything is regulated. Did you try going in and out of neutral again?

i drove my sentra at 65 mph and pulled the handbrake all while slightly pressing the gas pedal and the tires screeched badly but came to a long stop, tires were hot as a mofo. they should all stop, brakes should override gas pedal in newer model. that dude was driving a prius. look at his face now. I wish he was driving a Veyron 16.4 when this happened.

Funny, I have the Audi today and I just tried it. Contrary to what I said earlier, I am able to go from N to D while in motion just like in the FX. Argument withdrawn.

Lol!

If they can't replicate the issue, how did he nearly grind his brakes down to nothing? Unless he was accelerating and then braking hard.

prob abuse and never maintained the car
But the CHP officer smelled the brakes as he approached. Maybe that was just from the metal grinding down. It's an older Prius, so it certainly is possible it wasn't maintained though.

This story should be over though. The govment bought his car to do testing on from Toyota. Toyota should just give him that money and then they are done. He said all he wanted was a new car, and I wouldn't think he'd want another Prius. I think this has to be the best sudden acceleration Toyota story to date.

He should be taken to court for wasting everyones time & money . . then be forced to pay back all his debt'ers. That would be the fair thing to do here.
Senile drunk dude

Seriously. Wasting police time/gas/energy is a crime in itself, let alone recklessly speeding down the highway for 25min. He should be prosecuted just like the dick with the tin foil hot air balloon. If you want free publicity make a sex tape like all the other talentless reality stars...
I think he wanted out of his car loan so he and the wife can still drive after they claim bankruptcy. Toyota should give him a '92 Tercel automatic with a subpoena in the glove box.
