Replacing 2003 sport-tuned suspensions

Yes oem shocks and struts from a 05+ non sport model was the stuff we installed. Owner was happy with the ride. Let me know if I can help.

with 125k there def dead, no question about it, they were probably dead at 80k... shocks/struts are the kind of thing you don't notice go bad, they are so progressive in there deterioration that it's not like one day you just feel something different. trust me, a new set of struts & you'll feel like you got a new car, it's that dramatic of a difference...

when the fx was new, I know it was still stiff, but did it bounce around & get unstable in rough stuff? not anywhere near the degree it is now I'll bet. the fx new was & never will be a lexus ride, but with good struts it should be stable & predictable really... if it gets unstable on the rough stuff then somethings wrong... tires, alignment & struts....

Thanks guys for all these inputs.

I own my 03 FX since 2003! I love everything except the stiff bounces. When I test drove the car back then, I didn't go thru those roads with cracks/holes nor railtracks. It was pretty much a smooth ride and I didn't expect the sport suspensions will make this much of difference on this car. Until the first maintenance service which they loaned me a non-sport FX and I started to regret to get the sport package.

After 5 yrs with 125,000+ miles, I pretty much drove thru all the potholes in LA. I also tried every year's FX (including the new 2009). The best one is 2009 and that really makes me want to do something with my suspensions now.

My parents own Lexus RX. Try to drive thru those roadbumps in parking lots really feels the differences. Sometimes the bounces/sounds are so loud on my FX I feel like my tires/rims were damaged.

FX is a sport inspired "SUV". Not really sure what you're trying to accomplish in getting a soft ride. My friend has a Jeep SUV and it's a pretty soft suspension, but the con is that you feel like flipping over on every corner.

Since you have so many miles, I think you'd be "okay" with replacing all shock/struts/springs to OEM (and replace with non-sport).

I replaced my Struts at 50k and could tell the difference right away.

The type of ride you want sounds like a Cadillac or Lincoln Towncar, or like a Lexus like you mentioned.

If that's your only concern, it sounds like you had a good run with your FX with 125k miles plus!

I have a '05 and it's was supposed to have the "sport" suspension. Except we got a letter in the mail stating that they forgot to put it on.

I was wondering what would be the replacement part for the sports struts. Does anyone else make it or is it a strictly a Dealer part?

Jeff, does the KYB make sports version?

Hmm... being that I'm at 78,000 miles, I think I'll look into the KYB. Any feedback from previous experience on KYB struts?

I recall that the part numbers for the sport & non-sport were the same on our '05s.
Infiniti sent out a check for $500- for the mis-representation. This was for original owners only. They did have an option to swap in the sport suspension in lieu of the check, but with what parts is the question? I took the money

same here - took the cash and did some other mods

Same here. My wife took the cash and I don't know what she did with it.

However, I feel I need a stiffer suspension. I asked the dealer and they seem to know about it but they never actually looked it up. how about the '04? Aren't they essentially the same?

Isn't there a retrofit from another brand? I read somewhere (it may have been rookie who said it,) that there is a company in Hong Kong that makes aftermarket Coilover or sports suspension for FX. I remember someone asked the same question and the response was "unless you know someone in HK!!!"

Took the cash also cause I felt the suspension was stiff enough already. I will probably need need struts and shocks soon also as I am over 70k right now.

Too much autocrossing for you

I was told by KYB that I bought the first set of their struts/shocks, which i installed with H & R springs on my 03 that had a sport suspension - I bought back in June... they ahve been great! The whole set-up cost me less than $600 (for the struts and springs) which I installed myset - not that fun of a project to do without shop equipment. Anyway if you ever get out to Brentwood and want to check out the ride quality before spending $600 plus installation let me know...
