Here are couple of pics to show how to tell if you have a pre-recall and post-recall headlight. Nothing identifiable from the looking at the headlight externally. The only way to determine is to open it up and look at the shield. A pre-recall is a bowl shape front shield. A post-recall has a V shape front shield.

Engineers, what's the reasoning behind the change?

Thanks for sharing Andy.

When i did my headlights, i noticed that my post recalled headlights had a metal bracket protecting the ballast while the pre recall didn't have it.

i will forever miss the pre recalled projectors. They lit up the road so well. I was heartbroken when i sat in my FX with the post recalled ones

Interesting, my post recall did not have that metal bracket around it. I'm sure the previous owner is in no ability in messing with the headlight for sure!

I am so happy I have the original headlights in my fx.
I've driven next to the exact same car with replacement headlights and they just don't cut it.

Wow, thanks Andy in posting these photos. Always wanted to know the difference. Photos are in great details.

I read something in the past that said the old headlights weren't DOT compliant. The details were fuzzy and the language legalese, but basically they did not light up the road well enough. The post recall projectors had much more spread and the lighting was more even. The pre-recalls were much more focused; the HID retrofit guys referred to them as "laser like". I believe that was a complaint about the first generation FX-R projectors as well, not enough spread. I'm sure that's why they changed the shield, to spread the light out more. Weirdly though, if you get the clear lenses, you have to cut the V shield off.

Thanks for the post! Figured out I have post recall :( but ordered the clear lenses from TRS and should be here Monday so hopefully that'll help :)

i still have Turbocad's headlights laying around somewhere.. have to dig them out and see if i can do this mod to it without messing them up.. thanks for the info Andy!

Just need to cut off the "V" front shield and adjust the bowl shape by pushing it a bit toward the back of the projector and light it up to see if it give you good color and cut-off line. If not, play with it some more. The FX-R clear lens is no longer available as stated on TRS FX-R listing. They're sending TSX-R if you order FX-R lens now.

Well aren't the TSX-R what you need for post recall?

Or what that not directed to me?

TSX-R is what you need for post recall. But it will fit both pre and post recall. They stopped making the FX-R for that reason basically. No point in making a very low volume lense when another one is compatible w/ slight modifications.

If you look straight through the post recall lights you can see how the "V" shield rob light out put

And if you flip it upside down this is what is projected on the road it drops the beam off at the sides

I don't need to modify anything right? Just put the TSX-R lenses on and good to go?

I would cut off the "V" sheild, Or get the front 1/2 of the pre recall lights

If you cut the "V" off you will have a better cut off, like the pre recall ones
