Painting Rims

That sucks.
Why not just go aftermarket at this point?
Just how cool are stockers anyway . . In any color or finish? Is it really worth all the time & money for that look?

Here are some pics of the stains...

I noticed my neighbor's car which looks exactly like InFX35's, and has the same exact running discoloration of the oem wheels. At first, I thought it was InFx35 but remembered that he lives in MA.

I saw my neighbor the other day and asked him what happend, and he tells me that the carwash used "Chrome Cleaner" to clean his wheels. According to him, they are going to pay for damages which amount to $1500. It seems this happens more often than we think.

Is it possible that the carwash is using a harsh cleaner on the MirraChrome paint thinking they are real chorme? And now the same thing is happening???

I would If I could...but cost of aftermarket wheels are not in the picture for me.

Time and inconvenience is the major pain...the cost of the bodyshop painting the wheels is $400 out of pocket. They are covering the cost of the MirraChrome, which will be another $500. They say, they can do it right, but need the time.
This is the reason for the 3 weeks they are saying for the turn around.

The stains were another issue and I feel that the bodyshop used something to clean the wheels which wasn't compatible...they are not taking responsibility for it.

The peeling of the MirraChrome paint is due to the technique of which the paint was applied. The instructions that was given to the bodyshop from the manufacture contradicted from normal procedures on how they would usually paint.

IMHO the MY08 18" wheel is the best looking wheel I have seen on the FX so far. I agree that the stock 20" wheel is pretty weak though.

Umm....I recall a certain someone was so into their stockers they didn't even think of aftermarket wheels for a good long time :wink:.

True . . but after looking into PowderCoat, the cost didnt justify the final outcome. Stockers will always be Stockers. They are some of the nicest out there, but there's nothing getting around their extremely heavy weight, conservative offset & 8" width . . . . So I sold 'em

Its all good buddy, I know you were just waiting for the right set of wheels to come along and trying to convince yourself otherwise during the interim .

Aw shitty...

Btw, I like the look of the stock 20's over any aftermarket wheel, that's just my opinion.

I don't like the weight, I don't like the width, and I certainly didn't like the stock champagne color, but the 8 spoke design is awesome (again, IMO!).

I also don't like any lip.

you can always find 3 friends who would lend you their spare. As long as you're driving a few miles back and forth at 30 MPH or less.

Funny that you would say that...the bodyshop suggested that they will do one wheel at a time, while I used my spare donut! Imagine, 3 weeks for each wheel!
I have my family's safety to think about, plus I need to commute almost 40 miles back and forth to work each day...not going to happen.

I meant that as a Joke, of course. Too bad do you have "rent-a-wheel" out there.

I knew what you meant...just ironic that the bodyshop would have suggested it!

No we don't have a "rent-a-wheel"
I was hoping that there was a service called "borrow-the-wheels" here at :iS:

Jokes aside...I do really require the help.

Thanks!

Sorry to hear about your wheels bro ... hope it all works out. Is all 4 wheels peeling?

Not yet, but according to the bodyshop they will in time...better to fix the whole problem then wait until it is too late.

Look on eBay... about 2 years ago I picked up a set of 18's that had like 2k miles on the tires... I'm still using those same 18's with those same tires. I got 'em for $450 shipped... OZ Hydra 18's with 265/60/18 Yokohama Geolandars. It was one hell of a deal that I could not pass up, and it has been my best buy for the FX so far.

UPDATE:

Looks like the paint is peeling...the MirraChrome is not sticking to the black undercoat.

I stop by the bodyshop and they say that they followed the instruction from ALSA to the "T" and thought it was strange to be instructed to buff the wheels after the clearcoat on top of the black undercoat instead of roughing it up before painting the MirraChrome.

I took a few pictures of the peeling wheel, so the bodyshop can email it to ALSA.
Looks like it's back to the drawing board....

They said it will take at least 3 weeks to have this job done.

I'm in a spot now, due to the fact I won't have Ege's wheels to borrow anymore!
Anyone in MA willing to let me borrow theirs? :embarrassed:

:err:

William, maybe it's better if you get your money back from the body shop.. From what I've heard from you so far, these guys are 100% idiots. What if you can't get to borrow wheels from anybody? Get your money back man.. Not worth the effort..

This peeling happened just at a normal temperature.. I think it'll happen even with roughed up under coat at the colder temps during the winter.. Plus, I don't think it'll look like a black chrome finish if they rough up the coat below.

the most practical thing to do assuming no one else can lend you there wheels would be to buy a used set, then, after the ordeal is over, sell that set. I know this isn't the cheapest way out right now but in the end it may be & you probably won't loose much money really if any. more like lending to yourself rather than lending from someone else...
