OT Hyundai Genesis

you guys gotta admit... this is nice

It is time for Hyundai to join the rest of them:

Infiniti=Nissan
Acura=Honda
Lexus=Toyota
Mercedes=Chrysler (instead of Crysler becoming more like MB, it seems it's the other way around.

Mitsubishi=Ford (sorry I had too)
Mazda=Ford
LandRover=Ford

somefancyname=Hyundai.

I saw a television piece asking a Hyundai executive why the sedan and coupe weren't introduced as the Genesis brand. The explanation was that it would require creating a new dealer network that would raise the cost of the car. Instead, Hyundai stuck to its mission of offering affordable cars thus calling it a Hyundai Genesis.

Welcome to :iS:.. Nice first post. Proves that you've been following things.. :smile:
If the comment above is correct, they're still doing the same mistakes.. People don't get Hyundais because they are Hyundais.. Whether they do 10 year warranty or 20 year or lifetime or they do the best quality per price, they are STILL Hyundais... They need to get rid of that brand name for high quality products, stop stealing design clues from others and try competing against Infiniti, Acura and Lexus.. Not that I like Hyundai, but that's how they should compete for high end.. People that can afford these cars can also afford an Acura or Infiniti and they won't choose a Hyundai over these.. See how far Nissan differentiates Infiniti from Nissan brand and you'd get the idea..

I used to think the same (about re-naming the brand)... but now, I actually think they will be just fine with the name Hyundai... it sucks that we live in such a brand-whoring society... over at the Acura site... everybody's raving about this car... (and, its a HUGE site) if anything (ironically) there's quite a bit of hatin' on Acura for still not offering RWDs... and EgeFx... did you know Hyundai passed up Honda/Acura recently to take the spot of the 5th biggest auto maker in the world? Have you read how much money Toyota/Lexus has been losing lately? and they've put projects like that super car project (GTR beater) and the GS-F on hold... switching Tundra factories over to make more Camrys... trust me they are worried... another reason why I keep posting this thread is... hopefully get people out of the tunnel-vision mentality... I'm sure people in the Porsche forums say Infiniti is just Nissan... and they're right... and I'm damn proud of it.

Thanks, I typically lurk.

However, I disagree with your statement. I agree that Hyundai is still associated with unreliable budget beaters. However, I think it would take Hyundai the same amount of time in the market to do one of the following: improve their own brand, or promote a new one.

I think we can all agree that the current batch of Hyundais are better than the original Excel, and if the Genesis is an indicator of the cars they are willing to build in the future, I think the market will come to forget the Elantras.

last review i read, koreans were totally trashing the Genesis' handling.

Without any brand bias, the Genesis is a nice sedan/coupe but not worth the 30k+ pricetag, looks kind of cheap upclose. The car just doesn't have that "glow" if you know what I mean. If you don't, just go out and take a glance at your FX :cool:

I can name a number of other cars I'd buy before the Genesis at the same price level

For those of us who were born in the '70s and earlier, we remember the 1985 Excel. I remember one that was hit on the rear passenger side and the driver door would not open. :laugh:

The problem with the brand is the some still remember that. Unfortunately, anytime you make anything around "economically conscious" market, you either have to make it good with no luxury, or Crappy and luxury looking.

to my understanding, there's ONE Korean review where he bashed the Genesis... but he supposedly bashes everything... the American reviews have actually been pretty good. A bunch of guys over at the Acura forum have test driven it and gave their thrumb up... people should really get inside one and test drive it before giving negative opinions ... again I'm actually old enough to remember when Honda/Toyota/Nissan came out with Acura/Lexus/Infiniti... and people just bashed them...

I didn't want to keep reviving this thread cuz it was probably starting to get on people's nerves but since Alan bump'd it with his post...

5 stars all around: Hyundai Genesis aces NHTSA crash tests

Hyundai's all-new Genesis sedan made yet another smashing impression as it pulled-off perfect 5-star ratings in recent U.S. government testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The Korean luxury vehicle was sent into a fixed barrier at 35 mph with two crash dummies strapped inside. Once the dust settled, instruments revealed both front seat passengers would have had less than a 10 percent chance of injury -- results earning 5-star ratings. Front and rear seat side impact testing revealed a low probability of injury as well, also earning the car 5-star ratings. In NHTSA rollover testing, the Genesis exhibited less than a 10 percent chance of rollover, again placing it among the top performers in that category. The admirable crash test scores earned by Hyundai's first venture into the luxury segment are sure to give the competition even more sleepless nights, especially considering all that luxury and safety starts at just $33,000.

PRESS RELEASE

2009 HYUNDAI GENESIS DELIVERS NHTSA FIVE-STAR SAFETY RATINGS

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., 08/27/2008 The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded five-star crash test ratings, the highest government rankings under the agency's New Car Assessment Program, to the all-new 2009 Hyundai Genesis for both frontal and side-impact crash tests.
"Genesis was engineered with a lightweight but strong body shell, featuring ultra-high tensile steel, laser welding, and advanced adhesive bonding," said John Krafcik, vice president of Strategic Planning and Product Development, Hyundai Motor America. "Add eight airbags and electronic active head restraints and you can see the focus we placed on designing Genesis for occupant safety. These five-star results are just one indication of the dedication Hyundai engineers place on safety."

Maintaining Hyundai's emphasis on delivering leading safety technology, Genesis boasts world-class active and passive safety features that both prevent accidents and maximize the well-being of its occupants in the event of a collision. The Genesis continues the Hyundai tradition of standardizing key life-saving safety technology, with features such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), eight airbags and electronic active head restraints.

ESC compares the driver's intended course with the vehicle's actual response. It then brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces engine power as needed in certain driving circumstances to help correct understeer or oversteer.

Genesis' eight airbags include advanced dual front airbags, front and rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, and roof-mounted side curtain airbags for both front and rear outboard seat occupants.

Hyundai is the first popular brand to offer electronic active front head restraints, a standard feature on the 2009 Genesis, which are an improvement over mechanically-based active head restraint systems. Until now, electronic active head restraints could only be found on select Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus models. Active front head restraints have been proven by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety to help prevent whiplash.

Genesis is brought to a halt by large four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD). The V6 models feature 12.6-inch front rotors with single-piston floating calipers, while the V8 models feature 13-inch front rotors with four-piston calipers. All models are equipped with 12.4-inch rear rotors.

Just like they knock every car....

They should knock off the Acura "A" and make their "H" look like that also. lol
