OT: Concept cars/sneak previews

btw the way, I hate to rain on anyone's parade... if any of you were going down to a dealership to put money down for deposit.... At $2 million dollars... ALL 77 of them have been spoken for :err:

With car sales slumping in the shadow of a global credit crunch, Aston Martin have announced the news that the world's most expensive car in the world, their forthcoming new One-77, has its order book packed with customers. Limited to a run of just 77 examples and partially uncovered only last week in Paris, Aston have been able to secure in excess of 100 orders - the first deliveries for the 1.2 million pound 200 mph supercar expected to begin in autumn to those who've already put forward their cool £200,000 deposit.

Details are scarce, but the One-77 is expected to have a carbon fibre chassis, aluminium body panels and boast a 7.3-litre V12 block. The One-77 designation is however no reference to any of the car's workings, chief designer Reichmann explaining: "The number 75 just seemed way too obvious and normal; the number 77 was just two lucky sevens."

The announcement follows warnings over slowing European car sales in September, usually the hottest month for new registrations. Sales dropped most in Britain, down a fifth, while Western European sales saw a 9.3 percent decrease over September last year. With the release of the One-77, the £800,000 Veyron, presently the world's priciest new car, slips to second place.

Looks like X6 + new Mazda 6.. I bet they'll get rid of all the good looking lines and make it as fugly as any Acura out there now..

Talking about the X6 I drove one on Saturday for the first time. It was big, heavy, harsh, uninspired and had the cheapest interior of any $70K car I've seen to date. It "lumbered around" compared to the 1st gen FX even though it was a little quicker over the sprint. It looks ok from the front and 3/4 views but the rear is just fugly. Overall, a big disappointment for me as a BMW fan.

Ken that Toyota concept coupe looks hella hot. Wow

Tell me about it. Toyota's aiming at the guys that's gonna wanna mod.

I thought the FT-86 was going to be a Subaru?

Maybe there will be another version under Subaru, but maybe Subaru decided thet wanted to keep their lineup AWD. This is RWD.

The new FT-86 II Concept makes its world debut at the Geneva motor show, giving the clearest indication yet as to the final design of Toyota’s next sports car. It marks a return to the passion for driving that has inspired great Toyota cars of the past, starting with the legendary 2000 GT in the 1960s.

With its long, low bonnet, high wings and rear-set cabin, the FT-86 II pays homage to Toyota’s sports car history and is an entirely driver-oriented concept. It was created at Toyota’s European design studio ED2, where its styling was dubbed ‘functional beauty’: its bold, sweeping form has been generated purely according to the constraints of function and aerodynamics.

The low, highly aerodynamic bodyshell is stretched tight over the engineering hard points, with the muscular bodywork rendered as compact as possible. The concept measures 4,235mm long, 1,795mm wide and 1,270mm high, with a long, 2,570mm wheelbase.

Rather than using a heavy, large displacement powertrain to secure performance, the FT86 II returns to Toyota’s sporting roots by combining a free-revving boxer petrol engine with a compact and lightweight six-speed manual transmission and a low centre of gravity to achieve the best possible power to weight ratio.

Both the powertrain and the driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible to optimise balance for maximum poise, high-speed stability and agility. With a front-engine/rear-wheel drive configuration, this gives the car lively, accessible performance that is easy to harness and enjoy.

The FT-86 II Concept is the latest stage in the development of a new, compact rear-wheel drive sports car that is being jointly developed by Toyota and Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru). The new model will be launched in Europe in 2012.

I think there are shots of a Subaru being tested that is said to be the FT-86. And they have this photo suggesting a boxer engine.

I didn't realize Toyota ever made a boxer. Cool.
