Oil Cooler DIY

Mtn's oring is red, when I went to Nissan they gave me a black one. They say the black ones are the new orings.
As long as it's the same size it should work fine maybe it's an improvement over the old one.The old ones seemed to get swollen and soft. I would still use the non hardening Locktite Sealer on it too mine has not leaked since I did it last.:top:

Thanks, I remember my replacement was red, too, but appeared thicker before replacement. Probably just not compressed. Off to Nissan w/ the new PN.

Thanks for the write up. Did the DIY this morning using the new P#. What I noticed about the new ring is that it sits a little proud on the cooler, maybe that helps create the seal once torqued down. The previous one was leaking pretty bad so here's to hope that the new one does it's job.

Glad to know I can save a few bucks getting it at Nissan, plus it's 15 miles closer.
I deal with the same thing with my Acura. I try to get my parts at a Honda dealer.....

UPDATE; It's been two years now since I did this repair and no leaks still. The added sealer to the O Ring seems to have done the trick.

oil cooler diy loctite

do you Loctite both sides and where can you buy that autozone?

You can find them at Autozone/Pepboys/AdavanceAutoPart/HomeDepot/Menards/ACEHardware. :smile (2):

I have this same exact problem. Im probably going to pick up the oring tomorrow at nissan and fix it. do you guys know an estimate of how much oil is lost when taking out the filter? and i shouldnt need a new filter right? this one is new basically i did an oil change a few days ago :pissed-off::pissed-off::pissed-off:

Not much, the contents of the filter and a bit more. Make sure they give you the black ring, not the red one. Red is the failure-prone one.

Had not heard of this problem before. Maybe it was remedied in the later years. Are the symptoms just a slight oil leak near the filter?

About 2-3 oz in the filter, and a little more spills out when taking it off.

I change mine every now and then. It's cheap and easy so pretty painless when changing the oil anyways.
I had not heard that the red one is prone to leaking. I thought they both leaked after a while and the black one just came from Nissan instead of the red one from Infiniti.

Looking at the way it's designed with the through threaded shaft it would seem that over tightening of the filter itself could cause this issue. Mine still doesn't leak at all since repair with sealant over a year and 5 months ago now.

When I ordered the O Ring from Infiniti they said that this was a common occurrence and they sold allot of these o rings.
When I first noticed my oil leak I thought it was the hose just under the oil cooler that was leaking but after wiping it down and watching where the leak was I could see it was the oil cooler leaking. Oil loss was minimal but didn't want any leaks!

I noticed the TSB for it ended in'06 so maybe they did fix it. With as many miles as I have it seems interesting to not have noticed this if it's a common problem.

Just picked one up from Nissan dealership in Redlands, CA. It was $9.12. The have moved the price up......that sucks! Still cheaper than having the dealership do it.

Man i just did mine a week ago and leaking again. Put it at 35 ft/lbs to be safe. Maybe I'll redo and use the gasket stuff. Do u wipe every down with degreaser and put a thin bead around both sides of gasket? Any pics ? Thanks

Was it the black or red gasket? I replaced mine the first time with red and it started leaking soon after. Got the black at Nissan and it's been working fine w/o sealer. But you can clean the gasket and surfaces with some brake cleaner or such and add some sealer on both sides. And don't overtorque. You could warp something or worse, strip the threads.
