2005 FX45
Just wanted to say hi to everyone! I bought a 2005 FX45 last month and it is burning some serious oil. I am going to change the rings myself, wish me luck!

Hey Mac, welcome to the Scene!

It would be great if you can take pics and show the process via a diy.

Welcome to the forum! Hey, If you decide to work your way into the heads please note the valves are one time use and will need to be replaced if you pull them out.

Thanks for the info! My Mechanic told me I can work on it in his shop since he pulled the motor and Trans before I decided what to do (used or rebuild) so I think I will send the heads out.Has anyone had any luck with finding aftermarket Piston Rings? Dealer said $400 which is extremely high

If you do file fit vs. drop in rings, you should open yourself up to almost any ring on the market. Find stock measurements to get a feel for sizes. I know that in the last few years Nissan changed the production rings for the 45, and the configuration if I remember correctly. Measure your bores and calculate end gap. I'm assuming you'll hone if the bores measure up? Assuming your engine was never ran low on oil, you should have clean bores. You should see blow-by down the piston when you pull it, if the rings were really your issue. Back in the day ( I don't remember which vehicle ), The rings would always get stuck causing oil burn, they'd fill up each bore with seafoam through the plug holes and let sit overnight. Blow out by cranking, put plugs back in and fire it up.....this would usually get the rings to un-stick and run clean again.

This is my 1st ring replacement so I think I am going to end up just buying stock (Called DNJ they have a stock code for pistons and rings but have not started making them yet). I'm in Canada and dealer told me 3 weeks wait from order but at $400 a set I will wait until I can open it up and see what's going on in there (to your point). I seafoamed the motor (gas/crank/intake) and drove it a few days, then put a camera down each plug hole. It did clean it up but by the time I was ready to buy enough to fill up all plug holes motor was out. Piror to dropping motor the car was misfiring and cylinders 8 and 6 spark plugs were covered in carbon. We changed all 4 plugs on the same side, no more misfire but starting smoking about the same as it did in video (see below) which has been seafoamed. After a few days the carbon came back on the plugs and it started misfiring again. I can`t post a link yet but go to youtube and type Serious FX45 Smoke to see how bad it was.

I just seen the you tube video
And wow its burning and smoking alot!!!!

Good luck

And pls post up alot of pic for us 45 ers that may need this in the future

^^ knock on wood

One more thing was it like this when you got the car? Or it happened about a month after you got em?

Just curious....

it was the normal start up and start oil burning. If the the plug replacement and oil change is when it got as bad as you see.

I found a set of rings , "Top Line" Part # RS D47 bin-F07G05, I was skeptic when Bill Bunton Auto Supply said they could get them but "Top Line" is making them; they arrived today. My mechanic hasn't taken the Tranny off yet but I am hoping he slows down this week. Sorry I can't do any pics until 10 posts.

He won't do it. He is charging me to pull the motor out (since he already did it) and i am on my own after that but with his supervison (have known him for 20 years). Once I get the heads off I'll know what it needs but from everything I have read an FX with 130KM is not going to need much so all i'll do is send the heads out and clean the small block/change the rings. If it needs more I may just send the block out. That motor is around 5000.00 for rebuild and $4500.00 after taxes and shipping to Canada. A Used one may still give you smoke and/or burning oil and rebuilders compliane because most parts are oem. Sad
