Infiniti Announces JX Luxury Crossover To Join Its Line Next Spring

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (April 19, 2011) – Infiniti has announced an all-new three-row luxury crossover designated the Infiniti JX that will go on sale at its retailers in spring 2012 as a 2013 model.

An exterior sketch of the Infiniti JX suggests a vehicle that pushes the boundaries of what a luxury crossover can be – with signature styling cues of the brand, such as dynamic and elegant line treatments inspired by nature. The brand styling theme continues with a "crescent cut" greenhouse design influenced by the Infiniti Essence concept car. More details will be provided when the Infiniti JX concept is shown at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this August. The production version will make its global debut at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

"The all-new Infiniti JX crossover will allow us to continue to expand the Infiniti brand's presence in the Americas," said Carlos Tavares, chairman, Nissan Americas. "In 2010, Infiniti was one of the fastest-growing luxury brands in the United States, and this year we will expand our presence further to Mexico and Panama, followed by Chile in the first half of 2012."

"There aren't a lot of choices for luxury families today. The all-new Infiniti JX is the 7-passenger antidote to the ho-hum luxury crossovers that are out there right now," added Ben Poore, vice president of Infiniti Americas. "The Infiniti JX will have a stunning interior, while offering exceptional seating flexibility, easy access to the roomy third row, plus the latest in-vehicle technology – including next-generation telematics. A fitting addition to our line, it will challenge the status quo in its class."

The teaser sketch shows what Infiniti is calling a "crescent cut" greenhouse design reminiscent of the Essence concept. The Infiniti Essence, a 592-horsepower luxury coupe concept, debuted at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show and featured a gas/electric hybrid drivetrain. The concept was characterized by a long hood, short rear deck and a wave profile on the sides.

Infiniti did not release any powertrain details about the production JX.

Inside Line says: With the Infiniti JX, we finally see the fruits of the Infiniti Essence, which promised to be the culmination of all of Infiniti's design work for the past 20 years. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

Car and Driver

Infiniti sketches out the roadmap for a seven-passenger crossover.

We appreciate Infiniti’s forthrightness in announcing a sixth model for the American market. The company is using the occasion of the New York auto show to tease us with a sketch of the seven-passenger JX crossover, while a concept will appear at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in August and the production version will bow at the L.A. auto show this November. Glad that’s out of the way. The rest of the details, however, are still murky.

To wit, the watercolors-meet-blur-tool rendering shows a metal-trimmed sidelight opening that sweeps back into a kinked D-pillar, a treatment very similar to the one on Infiniti’s recent Etherea concept. (That same kinky look was also used on Infiniti’s too-hot-for-production Essence concept.) Muscular fenders and flowing body lines match the rest of Infiniti’s current lineup, save for the more blocky QX56. Fortunately for the JX, by way of its two-box shape, it doesn’t appear to suffer from the which-way-is-it-heading problem the Etherea did.

There’s no official word on what will motivate the JX, but trademark filings we uncovered last summer provide some hints. Infiniti has secured the rights to the JX20, JX25, JX25h, and JX30 badges, suggesting a lineup that could include four-cylinders, V-6s, and a hybrid. It’s doubtful that all four would be offered, with the more likely explanation being Infiniti’s desire to safeguard the alphanumerics for possible future use. The hybrid, however, is almost a guarantee, if not from the start.

An all-wheel-drive option also is a given, although the JX may be the first Infiniti in a long while to be based on a front-drive architecture instead of a rear-drive platform. If that is in fact the case, we won’t be surprised if Nissan gets its own version of the large crossover.

We also won’t be surprised when the expected concept looks nearly production-ready. If we don’t know much about the JX, at least we know exactly when we’ll know more. Look for more details at Pebble this summer.

According to the article, the FX has not been a big seller for the brand. Next to the G, the FX is the best selling Infiniti, no?

Haven't heard anything about the JX. Intrigues me, but it will not be large enough to be my next vehicle. Want something to tow a 23-25' boat.

would be nice if they do it on the z/g platform like the fx & ex, rather than the altima platform making it like a quest minivan...

During the Metro Infiniti meet, the manager mentioned an SUV with three rows coming soon. This is probably it.

This could be my next Infiniti if so. I was entertaining an older QX56 with Stillen supercharger -- but the thing handles like a boat.

I was just thinking a longer FX would be nicer. Come one Infiniti, build a crossover SUV on your front midship platform and give it OEM 22's and 12 piston/4 piston big brake kit standard -- okay, maybe I am getting a little carried away.

Wow that was fast, lol.

Love the idea of the JX crossover. QX isn't really for me and I think the JX will slot between the FX and QX nicely.

This is really interesting. I hope they keep it rwd and this ends up being more like an X5 than say.. a CX-9.

Off topic but have you driven the 2011 QX? Wondering if it handles any better...would like a full size SUV now but I do not like how the first gen. QX drives/handles, and I cannot afford the new QX until it depreciates into the 40s.

I see how this is kinda aiming at the Q7, LX market. I'd also like to see Infiniti reintroduce the Q to go up against the S class, A8, 7 series market. I think its about time (oh yeah, and the Lexus LS460)

I like the front end... not too sure about the rest..midsection and back remind me of a highlander.

I forgot to add this from Edmunds -InsideLine

Back in April Infiniti showed a sketch of the upcoming, 2013 Infiniti JX, seven-seat crossover vehicle that will go on sale in the Spring of 2012.

And while we still don't have any engine specs on the Murano / Altima / Maxima platformed vehicle, we do, finally, have spy shots. But based on the platform mates, we can safely assume a 2.5, a 3.5 and some hybrid variants and a CVT. Figure JX25 and JX35 with S or H after it.

The JX is inspired by the Infiniti Essence concept which was shown at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show and the official concept will be shown at the 2011 Pebble Beach Concours. We'll see the production version at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.
