I rode for years before taking the safety course and I definitely suggest taking it for ALL riders. They go over basic principles that matter in real life road situations. Other than the schooling, get yourself a well rounded learning bike to start with. Don't get a cool keeper bike, but one that can take some abuse. I think any variety of the street legal dirt bikes are ideal for learning. They're easy and light weight on the street. Take it in the dirt and become comfortable with traction loss and recovery. If you're comfortable with dirt riding, you'll be sooo much more comfortable on asphalt.
