modified struts & suspension

I just checked mine & they are fine, there is a bit of a lip around the whole upper pocket, it's not a huge lip but it's enough to hold the original seat in too, this isn't so much different from the way it's supposed to be really. at first I was a little concerned with the inner part, where it has that large centering cone, but the swapped lower seat also has substantial material there to keep the spring centered too & I haven't had any issues...

there isn't much force pushing these out of where they should be really, the only thing that I can think of is if the lower spring end is not where it's supposed to be then maybe that would make the spring want to ride off center, but if it's seated in the lower recess of the bucket arm right it should be fine. you have to make sure that the lower spring end is exactly at the step/hole/notch for it, if this is in the wrong spot it could cause the spring to cock off center...

thanks John, good to know .... like I said , just one side, could be easily fixed. I was very conscious when I placed them back in, "feeling" the lower spring bucket for the notch , also now th3e H&R logo faces the tire. Maybe it came unrested when I was going over a speed bump during my "tests:

:iS:

I had to help out and transport some drinks to a wedding .... the back passenger seats and trunk where full of soda/wine/alcohol also.

no rubbing or hitting the bump stop which is good.

on a side note. I wanted to order some Bilsteins but I wasnt sure I cross referenced correctly based on turbocads suggestion (86 F250 front) (Monroe Magnum p/n 34928)
if anyone can help me confirm this has the stem on top and same size as the Monroe's.
this is what I came up with F4-B46-1615-H0

I don't have my notes with me but I know a bilstien that will work, I'll look it up & let you know...

hows your spring seat doing?

thanks...

as for the springs seat, good. I actually havent took the wheel off to move it back fully into the spring seat on the frame. but I have been monitoring it. it seems to be slightly off to the rear and havent moved much. I think the "tabs" on the frame are holding the new mount. maybe when I get in there, I can come up with a "donut" to make up the difference in the hole size.

yeah, I've been a bit concerned there but it's been fine really. I do now have some slight noise happening in the rear occasionally, sounds almost like a bushing type creak noise & pretty slight... haven't really troubleshot it yet, could it be the much smaller spring seat? not impossible but probably not... I've been really beating it hard though so maybe it is a bushing or something...

bro, I'm sorry, been so busty past few days... all you gotta do is look at that f150 pickup front application, think it was like ~1985 4wd or so, there is a bilstien for that application, take a little googling & cross referencing from thr pdf's I put up, thought I had a pn writen somewhere but I checked & don't have the billstien pn recorded there, I'll try to look for it for you tommorow, sorry man

no worries. I was trying to gather as much info as I can since the mounting points are critical.

I got a complement about the difference in height from a co-worker and it made me realize that its sits pretty good and low right now and the ride is the same before the mod.
I will put off getting the rear shocks since I dont want to order the wrong ones. Maybe when someone else gets the part number from John , I can try it.

Remodified new set of struts for 1-1/2" on struts.

275 40 20 is ~28.7" overall diameter, could go 1 3/4" strut mod really max with that tire. in the end though the wheel gap is about the same, but the vehicle itself is lower. to affect the wheel gap the spring would need to be shortened.

def looks nice & low, lookin good

Drop looks good but those tires really takes away from the visual aggressive stance. FX looks like proportionally bigger then the wheel/tire combo. Definitely need wider wheel/tire combo for that drop.

been collecting components to build the best suspension possible using koni dual adjustable struts & trying to dial in the right spring rate. idea is to get it to ride identical to how it rides now, but allow me to lower slightly more & give me 100% adjustabilty on everything. spring rate, compression dampening, rebound dampening & of course ride height...

for a coil over suspension on the fx I think this is the way to go, total control, don't need it to ride like a jackhammer if it's set up correctly, I think it's possible to get a perfect balance of ride quality & performance by using the best components & building it myself. if engineered correctly this will be the best suspension your gonna get without totally radical stuff like reegineering arms & pivot points, I really think the fx has potential to really be a beast if tuned right. I plan on really trying to make it handle like a beast for next spring:tongue:

heres what it will look like when the kyb housings are machined to accept the strut & the coilover sleeve:

plan is to assemble one side, drive it & compare to the other side, then replace the spring either stiffer or softer to try & match the cut H&R I'm running now which seems to be pretty close to the ideal spring rate to me so far. in the end I might want to try a little bit stiffer than as-is, but the target for a still very good ride is a baseline at around where I am now to start...

the fx has big room for improvement, especially in the rear. adding the rear coilovers I did already had a huge impact on the handling, it handled pretty good before but it handles really really good now so far, I'll figure out a way to get the rear to also be fully adjustable just like the front so everything can really be fine tuned, wanna go from really really good to crazy beast increadable... ok, so it's a goal at least , but it should def at least have the potential to get better & better is always better:smile: ....

Great work and looks very promising John! Keep us updated as you never know who might benefit from all your mad scientist experiments, lol .

Agreed, Maybe all of us if it turns into an FX sport suspension set-up that compliments the GT-Spec gear......TC6 racing components.....
