just took them now, basically you tilt the mirror glass all the way up, then use a flat tip screw driver to pry the bottom edge open a little more so you can see in there. there are 2 slots for the screw driver tip to fit between the black glass housing & the inner white tilt plate, just pop these 2 parts apart at these points, then hinge the glass up. you then need to tilt the inner white tilt plate to a more straight position to be able to hinge the glass all the way up & then slide it out. to install slide the top tabs in, hinge down into place, then place the whole palm of your hand on the glass to distribute the force & push it in till it click locks into place. don't push with like just a thumb or something cause you can crack the glass if you put to much pressure at one point

Excellent! Thanks turbo, you are the man. Also, can someone take some detailed pics of how the curve of the mercedes turn signal matches the curve of the fx mirror? in one of turbos early pics, with the white mirrors sitting on his bench, it looks like the fx mirror cover has more of a curve than the turn signal, leaving a pretty serious gap between them. Also, in the pic where they are installed ont he car, there is a big gap under the signal too. is this just bad cutting, or do they not match up perfectly?
 
the Mercedes mirrors are a great match for the fx mirror, my first few cuts I was refining the template that I use for the cuts... aiya's look the worse because of the white color & the black gap at the bottom & it was one of the first ones that I did., they don't look bad at all in person but some angles of pictures you can see that the bottom line of the cut does not follow the bottom curve exactly. I perfected this cut template by my 3rd or 4th set, jordans came out pretty close to perfect, by then I got the funky bottom curve of the light right...

one thing that is an issue is that I'm doing these on mirror covers that are already painted, so there is absolutley no room for error. if I did my cuts & then painted the covers I would have the liberty of making this cut really perfect, because I'd be able to finesse the opening make a nice rounded edge without worrying about the paint...

for me to do the benz lights, I have been doing it with each guys existing covers so far... if I had to buy new covers, new lights, cut & assemble & paint them the cost would be very high, the covers alone are 80-90 list each, the lights are close to 90 for the pair, so were talking ~260 before paint or any labor... I have no way of doing these cost effective by using new factory parts... a set of new perfect benz mirror covers painted to match & assembled would wind up being at least $350-$375 which is higher than I think most would spend for these....
 
also just want to mention, I have since revised the template that is shown here somewhere, if anyone is going to attempt the mirror cuts themselves lmk & I'll get the revised template out, the lower cut & curve have been revised slightly for just the reasons gchristopher has mentioned... the template that's here is not horrible but the new one is better...
 
yes please upload the revised pdf. I dl'ed the old one and will do this mod once I can find a set of S550 lights. I assume these lights are different that the S500/S600 ? Is there a place I can find the lights at a low price?
 
how much you you think a body shop will charge to repaint the covers (est)?

I noticed my mirrors are kinda faded, but I guess I can apply the clear bra material and make it shiny again....

Hey john, if I go home over the weekend and pass by your shop do you think we can get it done in one day? I'm seriously doing this mod next time I go home. And probably (if they have them) install LEDs on them.
 
not really the kind of thing that can be done in one shot during one day, especially on the weekend no less, I'm only in the shop a few hours on sat.

really I'd need your covers for at least a few days...
 
turbo--> thanks again for the pictures on how to remove the mirrors....they were really helpful....Im not sure if I read this anywhere, but for your MD signals, do you have to trim down the inside of the mirror assembly to fit the lights?

Aww man.. I guess I will have to take a week off and get this done. Also those the signal lights we will be adding to the mirrors come with LEDs? If the answer is no. Could LEDs be installed?
 
yes, there complete light assemblies sealed with the amber leds...



yes. that's yet another issue of my design, the inner mirror needs to be trimmed. on later Ikey cars the antenna box inside the mirror needs to be moved over too. niether of these are extremely difficult & all of the cuts to the housing are not visable once assembled. no major structural material is removed & the mirror is not comprimised much, but this might be intimidating to some. my design puts the light inside the mirror housing

that's one of the differences between my design & the other. mine the lights are almost completely recessed into the mirror while the other, the light is actually mounted outside of the mirror, then the housing bubbles out to cover it. the benz lights are a bit deeper inside which gives good room for the lighting reflectors for the leds & make the whole light light up bright, the other is as slim as possible because it's mounted outside, so the reflectors are not as effective, you see the light mostly from the led itself... reflectors are a big factor in the lighting difference I think aside from the leds themselves...

a pair of black covers? maybe $50 or so would be a good price if you left them with the shop to spray them along with whatever they happen to be spraying black next... other colors will be more

Quick question..what did you use to cut the cover with? and possibilty of a detailed write up? maybe with pictures? lol for the not so mechanically inclined>>like myself? :tongue:cuz i wanna attempt this myself.. thanks in advance..

Nevermind i found the detailed writeup on .org. but i'd still like to know what you used to cut the cover with,and best tool/method for the job..thanks.
