Knockin'

I'm hearing some knocking when I accelerate... (sometimes), I'm here at Kragen's right now... I'm gonna get that Chevron Techron additive... it always helped with my Acura... do you guys have any other suggestions?

Might be the result of the LMS intake. I read in the org that it can cause a lean mix. I'd use a higher octane gas for a temp fix or a reflash for a better fix.

Reflash like TS reflash or just resetting the ECU? I was @ a drive thru last week and I too was hearing a knocking sound. I reset my ECU because I never did it when I installed the intake and the 1/2' spacer, since then I havent noticed it. I'll check when I get out of work to see if I still hear it.

yeah, I've been saying this for the longest time... but the TS reflash is a must... especially since I'm IN southern Cali... TS is like 30-45 minutes away... it'll take them like 10 minutes to do it. I KNOW my FX runs lean... (cuz of the LMS intake), you can just smell it when I start up my car... But the Techron additive seem to help a little, I didn't notice the knocking just now...

but the reflash will probably be my next and last mod for awhile

I'd think that a 35 wouldn't run as lean as a 45 with LMS, at least in the low-rev range where you'd hear it. That said, if you think you're running lean and hearing the knock still, I'd do a reflash, not a reset. Again, you might not hear it in the high end of the rev range due to your booming nismo but that'll probably be the place you'll get the worst of the knocks.

Try to go WOT when the car is absolutely cold and see if you hear it. I'd think that would be the optimal condition for a knock. Correct me if I'm wrong..

Ken - is it when you 1st start it? or is it everytime you start your FX?

How can I check to see if I'm running lean, Ken mentions that he can smell it when he starts his FX besides having to buy a gauge. I don't have a similar symptom that Ken has.

I'll try it when I get out of work and I'll post an update later.

I wanna say the smell is most apparent on 1st start... but then again, I can recall the day Humberto was doing my black out headlight housing, which was later in the day... we both noticed the smell. However, I must add too, the car had been sittin', the engine was cold...

So far the ones below are what I think are symptoms. Again, I'm not an expert on this, so correct me if I'm wrong:
- when the engine is absolutely cold, you kick it and at the top of the revs you hear a mechanical sound, similar to what you'll get if you touch a drill to metal sideways when it's on.
- The smell at the first start is a dense one. Can't describe this though.
- Your fx significantly hesitates from the start when it's cold compared to a warm state.

Best way is to measure it. I'd check if anybody has an AF meter that you can loan for a short time before sending out your ecu.

You can also get a piggyback and get your fx tuned locally instead of sending it out. It'd be cheaper on the long run.

I believe you can use good octane boosters as an alternative, but not sure how effective it'd be.

octane booster? but do I have to add it everytime I get gas?

Yeah.. Again, I'm not sure about that. My logic is that a higher octane gas should help with your Air-Fuel mix as it should get your fuel burn more efficiently, ie, using more air. Many boosted guys use racing fuel to keep on the safe side and with a good booster it should have a similar effect. It'll eventually be more expensive than going for a reflash, so if you're in CA, take a trip to Tadashi  If on the east coast etc, I'd get an emanage ultimate or a similar aftermarket ecu and get it tuned by a good tuner. It shouldn't cost you more than $250-300 for the piggyback used (you don't need UTEC) and each tune should be 1-1.5 hr labor.
