K&N drop in filter can damage Air flow meter sensor!

I think it's legit. But it's a simple aluminum tube, brackets and MAF adapter.

Why don't you try it?

for the 2nd generations out there want quick free horsepower. Take out your fiilters and the plastic that holds the filters in. Your engine will growl +10-15hp..

Then choke and die from sucking in road debris ..

K&N filters for as long as I've had the FX basically. I don't think I ever oiled my panel filter. Stillen(K&N) cone was oiled and dried for a few months so no issues there. If you do it right, there shouldn't be any issues. I usually dry off the back side of the filter more so nothing will blow directly into the intake tube.

Installed preoil drop in K&N air filter about 6-7 months ago, here is the symtom starting 3-4 days ago. Idle drop every once a while. car loss power while driving. can be dangerous if it was in high traffic situation. lucky my wife was able to pull over to the side of the road. wait few minute and it would start going again. This happen random so it would drive nornal and it would just happen all the suddent. also MPG would decrease. MPG go down to 16mpg on the trip info screen. Took it to the dealer, service result was Air flow meter sensor damage cause by oil from K&N filter. Cost to replace sensor by dealer? $800 and some change. decide to do it myself... got used one from JY for from 350Z same part #. 350Z sensor cost me $25. sensor replaced and stock filter put back in.. problem gone. MPG now back to 20 also. keep my finger cross for now. any one experience this? comment.....

sprtfx, I do have the K&N air filter, but I do not have the loss of power or idle drop... I am however getting horrid mpg which has been declining over the last year or 2... Which is about when I put the K&N in. My mph has gone down to 11-12mpg this winter. Last winter was probably 15-16mpg. I would like to change the Air Flor Meter Sensor regardless, to see if it will cure the problem. I also have the gas gauge problem, which I tend to fix tomorrow. Where is the Air Flow Meter Senor located? Is it easy to switch. I know its a lot to ask but a picture of it would be FANTASTIC!

Cheers!

MAF sensor is a few hundred dollars. Try MAF cleaner first, new spark plus, injector cleaner, sea foam to name a few.

Your Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) is located on the filter end of your intake tract. If you trace the path from the filter to the engine, the first wire you find will be connected to the MAF sensor. Fyi, you don't need to replace it, just clean it with CRC MAF sensor cleaner.

Thanks for the help guys! I have a busy day tomorrow! I plan on changing the spark plugs as well... Do you guys happen to have instructions? I saw there was some on here but they've were removed... I will try to find them in the light tomorrow... They certainly aren't easily accessible....

yeah try clean it first with sensor cleaner etc... car-part.com you can search for fx air flow sensor, it may come up with different car but use same part. I got my for $25. brand new or after market on ebay run about 180. swap back to stock filter and replace map sensor was a quick fix for me since it was cold out side. my MPG now about 17.8 average. I guess that is the norm. no idle issue since. good luck

why is that?
hmm and would i have damaged my car in great deals?

Good Thread I am using a drop in K&N as well with no issues ..... still getting decent gas mileage (I have a heavy foot), no idle issues or stalls .... however; won't need to worry about the K&N any longer soon my MantaRay will arrive! :smile (2):

I have had the same K&N filter installed for nearly three years and did not have any MAF problems. I do change it out for a cheap ten dollar Napa paper air filter every spring and put it back in after the pollen count goes down near the summer. However, I will not clean and re-oil it due to the risk of over oiling it. I am going to buy a new K&N filter this summer, because this one is way over due for a cleaning or change. However, my gas mileage is still good even though the filter is three years old.
