Jumbo wheels

Priced out the DPE wheels I was interested in at $5100. The group buy reduced that, but I didn't bite and the GB is over now.

The iForged of a similar looking design is $3800. The rubber I'm looking at will be close to $1500, so I like iForged's price.

--------------

Think I finally figured out the tires. Lots of calculators and I even used a spreadsheet. heh.

Front 265/40/22, overall diameter of 30.35 (0.05" smaller than OEM)
Rear 285/40/22, overall diameter of 30.98 (0.58" larger than OEM)

Found Falken Ziex & Yokohama Parada Spec-X in the proper sizes - both staggered options are under $200 per tire.

--------------

Trying to decide on wheel colors. Today I'm leaning toward gloss black spokes and a polished lip - Panzer74 just installed the iForged Seneka in 22" and I LOVE that wheel. It's gotta flow with the rest of the car tho.

I think that's a great tire size setup for a RWD FX. I'd go with Parada Spec-X. I've had Falken Ziex and they're a good tire, but the rubber is pretty hard and not too sticky. But easy to balance and lasted me 60k or more miles.

I have the Yokos on my car now and like them a lot. Just wondering if I need to go higher "performance" since I'm turbocharging the car. Going wider to increase grip is only part of the equation - the tires mean so much to handling.

60K on a set of tires for the FX is amazing - I'm on my fourth set of tires and none of them have lasted more than 30K. Of course, the first three sets were RSAs and then I joined IS, so I'm on my first set of Yokos and they are doing well.

Sorry didn't clarify, I had the Falken Ziex on my QX4 that lasted 60k miles. OEM tires on FX lasted 30k and were pretty bald. ~70k out of the Hankook RH06. I have good year fortera sl, which should last even longer (thread rating 500 I think, which is why I chose them - discontinued). Yokohama Parada Spec-X's are 420 thread rated so depending on how you drive, can easily last 60k-70k.

If you like Yokohama Parada Spec-X, try Yokohama ADVAN S.T. (Street/Sport Truck Summer) 320 AA A. You are going from 420 A A to 320 AA A, therefore you are giving up tire thread life for increased traction. You are going up a traction grade from A to AA, to a minimum g force traction coefficient on asphalt of .47 to .54 (.35 to .41 on concrete), which is a decent increase.

Your OEM tires, Goodyear Eagle RS-A are rated at 260 A A to give you a baseline.

Hope that helps.

I just wrote all that and realized ADVAN S.T. doesn't come in your tire sizes... Looks like Prada Spec X is the way to go...

just heard back from iForged. The Seneka and the Neo are 36/35 lbs, respectively. That's an improvement from the 41lb OEM stockers. Think I'm leaning towards these wheels!

Well - Wheels are going to the back burner - again. I had saved up some cash but my FI package seems to be growing and I needed the money for that instead. Oh well - maybe a few months after by turbo is up and running, I'll come back to the wheels.

Still leaning towards those Senekas. Man, after seeing them on Panzer74's ride, I'm loving them.

Now that the FI build is starting to come to a close, I'm back to the wheels. Still think I'm going with the iForged Seneka.

Gloss black spokes instead of the chrome above - with the same polished lip.

Here's Panzer74's post with his Seneka wheels. I think I want just a little wider, plus I'm going with a staggered setup rather than four straight.

There are some competitors out there, with a similar looking wheel:

http://www.issforged.com/

The two ISS styles I'm looking at are the Spyder and the FM-10. Both very Seneka-like. The installer I'm working with right now has a connection to ISS forged and can get better pricing. Something I plan on looking into before pulling the trigger.

I say do the iForged Seneka. They look awesome on Panzer74's ride so no need to photoshop.

I would probably try 11" rear and 10.5" in the front wrapped in 305/35/22 front and rear.

Glad you made the suggestion. Here's what I'm thinking. Help me out if I'm crazy, which is possible.

I have this vision in my head for how I want the wheels to look. I see the wheel rims actually extending just slightly outside the fender - maybe as much as 10mm, but then have the rubber stretched so that it curves back into the same line as the fender. I would do this by getting slightly more narrow tires than the rim width calls for. Yes, I'd be getting 11" wide in the rear, but probably with 265 or 275 wide rubber.

I'm not talking about a crazy stretch here. Just enough so that the rubber isn't riding square to the wheel rim. I'm not worried about curb rash or protection for the rims as much as getting it to look like the picture I have in my head. I also know the wear won't be quite as good but don't care.

The fronts will be 9.5 wide, also with rubber a bit more narrow - maybe 245 or 255. I want a photo of THAT setup because I think it would be a subtle change from Panzer's setup, but dialed in to that picture in my head.

Okay, first when I read this, i thought you were crazy=). Then I did the numbers and okay, you are not that crazy. The stretch isn't bad as you said.
265/40R22 9 - 10.5 in
305/35R22 10 - 12 in
285/35R22 9.5 - 11 in

But then again, if you look at this visual, I think you might be exaggerating in you mind how much the tire will "bubble" up in a more stretch tired vs a wider tire. 10 mm outside the fender? I would roll/dremel your inner fender sheet metal if you haven't already.

I think 11" rear and 9.5" front will look good. Less width in front = less steering wheel sensitivity which is good and really gives your staggered a bigger difference.

I think you should stick with the "normal" pick for tires and not go too wide or too narrow. Your wheels are the highlight and tires should just compliment them. I just think you're giving up on what you mentioned (side wall protection and wear) for such a slight visual change, it's not really worth it. I guess you would notice, but unless you went from an extreme wide to an extreme narrow, don't think it makes a difference due to the physics of the tires, with the tread width being dependent on the rim width.

The tires you choose and their sidewall bulge will greatly affect how much you can safely stretch them out. All tires have different sidewall bulge even if the tire size are the same. I would caution on the side of safety instead of aesthetics especially since your recent FI upgrade.

You can only do this IF you get a HellaFlush sticker and put it on your rear window at a 45 degree angle. I will be glad to pick one up in SF at the Fatlace store next September.

Like this puppy I saw this weekend. I'd like to see this on an FX just to see how what it would be like.

hahhaha, I'm pretty flush in the rear but nothing like the "stance" guys. I don't quite get the whole stance thing, but I do appreciate most of those types of cars are kept really clean.

Actually this is closer to what I'm talking about, but the stretch is just a bit too aggressive to me. I like the way this looks and plan to go this direction, but I want the look to just begin to show a stretch rather than scream it out. See how the tread appears to be about 1/2 inch inside the fender? I want the edge of the tread to be flush with the fender.

Also, there are tires out there that have built in lip protection even when stretched. Saw tires on a G35 at the install shop that fit the bill - just need to see if they come in the right sizes for me.

Since I have the coil-overs I can always adjust ride height for no rubbing. Going ultra low is not in my plans. I'm thinking just a tiny bit lower than the Eibachs.
