Jumbo wheels

hahhaha, I'm pretty flush in the rear but nothing like the "stance" guys. I don't quite get the whole stance thing, but I do appreciate most of those types of cars are kept really clean.

+1

The cars with the stance look nice, but I've seen two varieties:
1) Car bounces all over the place
2) Car looks planted but you can tell the ride is rough, but have done the suspension right though tuned and more suited for a track vs street.

I've always liked a little gap and would rather not slow down to 0 mph at a speed bump.

not much comment on the stretched part, only that it can be very difficult to know how exactly it's going to sit until you actually try a particular combo & the lower the sidewall the harder it will be to judge end result before hand, but far as your plans of gloss black centers, as far as I know, Iforged don't do gloss black. I think the reason is that for gloss black, the metal finish work would need to be better than what Iforged normally does for there centers, so they only offer a satin black to somewhat hide the less than perfect cutwork on there centers... to do gloss black would take a lot of extra hand finishing work that Iforged don't do normally... I redid my iforged gloss black & had to do a lot of sanding smoothing & polishing to the centers before it was ready for gloss black...

What size wheel are you going to run stretched? even a 22" wheel with stretched tires is going to look akward even if its slammed

You've seen this combo? If you have photos, post them up. Part of my problem is that I can't see it for real - only in my head. There it doesn't look awkward at all! Thing is - this is what I'm doing. No matter what kind of opinions I get here - I think I'm different than the most common and mainstream opinions on the forums.

This tire mounting style comes from a JDM tuner trend, mirrored in the USDM by the "stance" guys - neither are universally popular even by Japanese standards. I identify most with that style and have enjoyed reading JDM magazines and sites. (I have a thing for Japan. Took language lessons, visited, have friends living there, etc.) Just like any style or trend, people can take it way too far. That's not my goal - as I stated, I want more of a hint. A styling cue, as it were. These cars are not even sold in Japan, so it's a western market vehicle, that I want to have a little Japanese style.

Slamming is not a plan for me. Never liked the look - not even on Rookie's car, lol. Before I got into modding, I would see a slammed car - maybe bagged - and I thought, "that looks like a clown car. I expect 25 dudes to come tumbling out of it when the doors open." Now I'm not quite as harsh of a judge of the style but don't want that on my car.

I got the coil-overs ONLY for the stiffness adjustability. The Eibachs lowered my FX to the point that I had to slot the sub-frame to keep camber/toe inside OEM specification. I can't see going lower than that because the suspension geometry just won't allow it (with camber/toe in spec). Turbo and I had a long phone conversation about exactly this lowering problem. The only way to really get it right is to change the geometry which means custom fab work since there is no kit out there for the FX. But that's only if you WANT to go lower - which I don't. I like a little gap and don't EVER want to worry about rubbing at speed or on rough road.

Since I'm not an experienced stance guy, I'm getting help from those with experience to pick the rubber. Most likely you will recognize the width - I expect 245 or 255 on the front 9.5" wide wheels and I expect 275 or 285 on the 11" wide rear wheels. As far as the ride goes, what I sacrifice in the tires hopefully I can compensate for in the suspension.

If I do all this and fail to get what I want or just don't like the ride - I'll change the tires. No biggie. Trying things and having them not work out is nothing new - it's the only way to know for sure.

As for the gloss black centers - maybe semi-gloss would work too. That, I can probably photoshop.

I think you're dead on with the wheel coloring. Gloss Black with Chrome lip lloks the best on Laser Red. I have another red car with that combo and I'd like it on my FX.
I know its not in your neighborhood, but there's a place out here (Anaheim, I think) that will let you try any wheel and tire combo before you buy. They mount want you want, put your car in their showroom and let you decide. I would think for a several thousind dollar sale, other places would offer this. -or should

Oh yeah I forgot about NuTek wheels. I just found their MSRP pricelist as I inquired about a wheel I built on their configurator. Might want to check them out for yourself. The Classic Series 304 might be something you would be interested in...

The Saga continues. While my FX has been in the shop these past FOUR months, one of the guys from ISS forged was in the shop and got in touch with me about some wheels. I've been drooling over the iForged Senekas for so long. All because of Panzer74. I really think he's got the best looking set of wheels on a 1st gen.

I pulled this polished version off iForged's site:

Anyway, here is the ISS Forged equivalent, mounted on a sick R35. These are actually 21" faces with a stepped lip up to 22" rubber. I would have to choose between exactly this wheel OR a straight lip (no step) with a 22" face. These straight lip versions would be 3 pounds heavier each.

Also, I asked if they made a version that hides the bolts - and they do. No hardware will show on the face, making a cleaner look.

I'd be getting exactly the color above OR getting a gloss black face with a polished lip. If I go the gloss black route, then I'll be powdercoating the billet grills to match.

I think you have a good (and unique) thing going with your red/shiny color scheme. My vote is against the gloss black finish.
I'd have to see the straight lipped version to say for sure but I think the set pictured on the GT-R would look hot hot hot.
Four months is brutal man. You should buy a cheap pair of rear tires so you can promptly burn them off on the final pickup day.

wow that stepped lip is very cool, I like that. very nice looking wheels. I may have choose the 21 stepped to 22 if I had that option when I ordered my wheels, the step is very nice & takes away the deep dish look, plus I bet you can use conventional valves with them rather than the pita inside valves that have to be used with standard 22" 3 piece wheels... the steps probably make them stronger too, & there lighter to boot, def nice...

Tell me about brutal. I had to go out an buy a whole car just to commute in while the FX is in the shop. Not a planned expense.

As for the color scheme, the wheels are going to make a big change to the overall look. I'm trying to keep them in balance with the rest of the car (in my head) and it's tough to know I'm going to like the outcome. I guess it is possible that I start with the brushed aluminum and decide to have them powdercoated later on if need be.

The weight & strength of the stepped lip design make it the right performance choice but I'm pulling my hair out trying to make a decision based on the looks of a 21" face stepped to 22" barrel or 22 face with straight lip, without actually being able to see or compare the setups. Wish I had some photoshop skills at my disposal. Where's GTO when you need him?

My opinion is go with the stepped lips, I'm even a fan of the flat lips. The stepped will be different because no one else has them. We have no lips, flat lips, and the newest "in" thing concave wheels on FX's. Not a single person has stepped lips to my knowledge.
