Jumbo Boost

Damn Brad, I am so sorry to hear this. I'm glad everyone is ok though. I had no idea until Stu mentioned it to me when I met him up over the christmas holidays.

Seeing the pictures and knowing everyone came out almost unscathed makes me feel that much more comfortable about the FX being our "family car".

Good luck with insurance and your search for a 50S!

Not yet - still in insurance negotiations. They came back with a settlement, I submitted receipts, they increased the settlement amount - now I'm getting an independent outside appraisal done to try to increase the settlement further.

The way the policy is structured, they are discouraging me from buying back the car. If I buy back the car, the settlement amount is almost nothing. If I negotiate up the settlement amount a little more, I'll be able to get into another FX (probably used) clear - which is my goal. Unfortunately I might have to say goodbye to all those yummy parts with less than 12,000 miles on them. I've been getting used to the idea over these past five weeks but I haven't given up yet. I'm going to do my best to set myself up for success but I know these things rarely go the way of the policy holder.

I did some preliminary looking for 350Z transplant options - they can be found for around 7K. Then again, I could also buy a fully built turbocharged Z for under 20K.

I need to try to remember my priority is being able to drive my kids around. This car I get needs to be a family car, not another project. At least that's my approach in buying it. After owning it, I might make some minor aesthetic or NA performance "upgrades".

More to come, nothing set in stone yet...

You're right about that, Kim - I was honestly impressed with the airbags. If there ever was a pleasant impact experience, I had it. I only remember hitting the side curtain airbag and it felt soft. No visible marks on me at all. My passengers had a couple red marks from the seatbelts - but both of them are really big dudes. The car sacrificed itself to save the passengers and in the end that's all we need it to do in an accident.

yeah, the problem with what your trying to do is to get the insurance company to pay you for all the extras you put into the car, but then you want to keep all the extras too by buying it back. they don't want to have to pay for something that your going to keep, so to buy it back you may just have to settle for standard fx35 price where if you give up the whole car then they will have to pay you for all the extras. probably going to make the most sense money wise to just give up the whole thing and get as much of a settlement as you can, probably come out way ahead like that. you can't look at what it cost you you can only look at what it's worth as it sits there. either way best of luck with it bro, hope it works out for the best for you...

The Big Red Phoenix

Well it's all settled. I have the car, I have my settlement cash and I have a plan.

She's rising from the ashes, reborn under a salvage title. After sitting since December 20th of last year, Big Red was transported to a body shop yesterday. We're not just repairing, we're going for a custom exterior - not a full body kit but custom flares, some subtle changes like painting all exterior plastics and of course a full repaint to the original color.

I'm thinking I'll be driving her again in about a year and I've learned how to be patient so it's all good. Body work was estimated at 8 weeks to return to stock, then the custom work will begin. The airbags and damaged interior trim will be replaced as well.

After the body work, the plan is to return the drivetrain to pre-crash with the addition of a custom Carbon Fiber driveshaft and some lightweight forged wheels.

I had seriously thought about keeping this quiet until it was much closer to finished and then dropping the bomb on yall. But I've shared the whole trip up through this point - why stop now?

I was wondering if you were willing to share any advice for us fellow modders -- I also have an aftermarket parts insurance through my auto insurer -- is there anything you would do differently or suggest we confirm with the insurer to make claim settlement smoother if something does happen?

I am well covered up to $x,xxx, but wondering if something did happen, what they would actually pay out.

Great question! I've wondered about that as well. So far my insurance company knows nothing of my modding...

Question about the CF driveshaft, isn't ours already composite? Are you just making it a different size (wonder what that could be for???) or stronger?

kinda late but sorry about the loss (temperorary loss) and glad to hear all is situated and noone was hurt.. now back to the drawing boards and cant wait to see the final outcome!!

ours compared to the Z unfortunatly isn't carbon fiber.

Brad that is great news man....!! Glad to hear you we're still not done with you project. I can image when something like that happens after all that time put in such a project you would loose faith but glad you finally didn't.
And i think i do not have to say again i want to keep posted on the shaft :)

Great, I'm glad this one is being resurrected. Such a great build.

Now make sure you change your signature from FX50S FTW to Born Again....or Rising from the Ashes.
