JBAKER1121'S FX50 EXHAUST thread

I got to get off my butt and get a clip of mine ...... I like the throaty sound of a V8 :) What's the update on the decreased drone???

Sorry guys busy busy work week and work around the house. I'll have a vid up by the weekend. Loving the new sound

No dice with my custom exhaust installer, he could only get 45 or 90 degree mandrel bent pipes. Off to see if a custom mandrel shop can do it as one piece for each side without being prohibitively expensive. I have a feeling this is going to get pricey.

Update:

For some reason my shifts seem quicker and when i downshift to a high rev there is less engine braking than the old exhaust setup... Not sure how these are related but it is something I've noticed.

andddd still haven't gotten around to that video

Had two "sport mufflers" installed about a foot down from the rear resonators - quieted down the sound but still sounds great. Barely any drone in cabin now.

Been running around like crazy. Vid will be up

lol

Yeah al I have is iphone now - ran out of room on it so decided to upload. Was eventually going to make a full video for youtube.

Not factory pipes! Did a muffler delete w/straight pipes ;)

me too. wakes me up in the morning.

here's another video from this morning, from my second story apartment. Just to show the volume. Photobucket fucks with the quality so when I get it on youtube itll be better.

Again, this is after letting it sit overnight (In this case about 10 hours since I got home at 12:45)
If I've run it during the day it's not this loud until you let it sit a while.
I may get cutoffs near the mid just for fun... figured Im keeping the car anyway until 2015 may as well mess around a little.

WOW! That sounded really really nice, sounded like a C63AMG on start up!! I would love that, unfortunately think my neighbours wouldn't be happy with me for waking them up every morning!!

Just to recap what you did, you just simply deleted the rear most back box, but kept everything else standard??

I was thinking of keeping everything else standard, but deleting the centre section with straight pipes, think it should a little quieter??!!

Been reading all about this thread.. Any chance you can get an undershot of the final product? Also -
Can you provide contact info for anyone wanting to get this setup from your NY Shop?
Im guessing they might cut you some future deals if you can sell 5-10 of these online.

Thanks again

Chip (Newbie) but not to Autos! ;)

I have been exploring this option for quite some time now also. What brand sport mufflers did you go with? There are a few different brands like Megan, Magna Flow, and Flowmaster making these small sport mufflers. I'm pretty sure there are many more brands out there.

These are whatever the shop had laying around - I did it on a whim. I think they are Vibram sport mufflers.
cars is at the dealer all week. Will upload media next week

The new version of my muffler delete... with "tuner" mufflers.

The Idiots cut off the flanges when installing these :bulgy-eyes:

Still playing with the new camera. Video soon ;)

However, I'm planning on changing the exhaust again. The setup looks ugly and I want something better looking, like an actual exhaust.
Was thinking of getting an HKS hi-Power replica (350z/g35/370z/g37 version) just the rear canisters, and cutting them up and sticking them back there.
Should have basically the same sound I have now, with better look, and not much spent (replica can be bought on eBay for $188 free shipping)

I would cut off the horrible 4.5" thin tips and put on some 3.5" rolled, angled tips. At least the tips will look stock ;)

edit:
so I forgot this "Fx38S" in tiawan has already chopped off an HKS Hi-POwer from the g37 to fit a 2nd gen FX. Now I know what it looks like

maybe I should get an entire knockoff exhaust and not just the rear section... cheapest is about $350 Shipped.... I need to figure out how much work really needs to go into it

UPDATE

Old ghetto mieneke setup: Muffler delete with 2.5" piping, added two 'tuner resonators'
IMG_5062_zps09478666.jpg

Video!!
http://youtu.be/CNAaRNqynYA

I liked the sound, was not much drone or bass but driving around town (or with my parents) it was just too loud. I think for an SUV like the FX50 it needs to be more refined? Maybe I'm just getting old.... (turning 23 this year ;)

-----

NEW SETUP!

After two days (approx 8 hours of work) my new custom-fitted HKS knockoff muffler is complete.

IMG_5063_zps96ea98c2.jpg

Ordered this bad boy off of eBay for $190 shipped: Replica HKS Hi-Power exhaust for the Z/G models
IMG_5039-2_zpsc0c2a208.jpg

Page claimed 304 stainless steel, high quality, etc. at under $200 did I expect this to be true? no. was it true? no.
It was stainless, but it contained a lot of contaminants and the quality of the metalwork was subpar. Most of the welds were actually mig welds made to look like tig (you need to TIG stainless steel) and the two sides did not actually match...from the distance between the two canisters to the angles they are at.

However, After two days (approx 8 hours of work) my new custom-fitted HKS knockoff muffler is complete.

Since the old setup had already deleted the flanges from the factory mid pipe, we just cut further back into it to accommodate more of the polished piping.
IMG_5088_zpsf51342a3.jpg

Then, we cut and re-angled the piping of the muffler in order to make it fit properly. We also needed to adjust the positioning of one of the hangers (extended it) so that the canisters could sit evenly on both sides.
check out these tig welds
readjusted piping:

on car:

IMG_5091_zps6272a416.jpg

Then, I decided not to use the disgustingly ricey 4" non-rolled tips that came with the exhaust. I didn't have time to locate exactly what I wanted, but I decided that the stock tips actually went nicely with the new setup, and when adjusted, didn't look "too" stock.

We adjusted the tip positions with a micrometer and digital level to ensure they were perfectly even (some of you know how crazy I am)

IMG_5090_zpse868f0bc.jpg

You may be asking "hey, isn't that the factory piping behind the tips going into the muffler? stainless on 'normal' steel!?" yes, it is the factory piping. However, it's mild steel going onto a crappy stainless, so with excellent Tig welding, there will be no issues.

I didn't have time to polish up the factory piping to a matching shine, but that is coming soon.

finished:

IMG_5097_zps7684ff44.jpg

Much better pictures to come, that's all I could get at 1am last night.

The sound? QUIET! I still have factory resonators on the midpipe, plus these funky canister secondary resonators PLUS the two trashcan mufflers... it sounds a little louder than stock. I need to drive it more to break it in before I make my final decision on whether I like the sound or not. I may end up changing out (or deleting) the factory resonators for something else, since I had to cut it up anyway... but we need to see how the knockoff muffler holds up.

In total, I spent less than the price for a high-quality rear muffler for a custom-fit, "one off" muffler on my FX50 that no person will have the same.

I love the way it looks, it's just "cool". It's too quiet now, and if it doesn't get much louder, the stock resonators are going.

keep in mind it hasnt been driven much on the new mufflers so they probably will break in a bit more. Already got louder compared to last night.

Yeah man it look long enough to do the work. One guy worked on it, he is as meticulous as I am, his welds are phenomenal, and it came out great.
Hopefully I like the sound when it breaks in...haha
