I finally did my FX50 BBK front

Disclaimer: This is not a DIY, just to share with everyone that what we all can do and what mistakes I made to help the other people interested in doing this.

Special thanks to our Chicago land big brother :La_FX35 (aka Handy_Andy). If it were not him backing me up and his encouragement, I would just be thinking but not doing. And his offer about coming to help me if I really hit the wall really relived all my fears so I could move forward. Also his fast reply whenever I had a problem or any doubt about how to proceed.

Just some background, not too long ago, I had never opened my engine hood and even changed oil. After joining this amazing forum and seeing so many people "can do", I decided maybe its time for me to give it a try. So if you think you can, don't just think, do it.

The front driver side after the conversion. I also changed the brake line to SS braided one.

The rear changed to slotted and drilled rotors and Akebono ceramic pads. I also painted the caliper to silver to match the front.
The milk case was to temporary hold the brake fluid (which is a mistake and will elaborate later ) while getting the SS line connected.

I also got the parking brake shoes replaced, which is the first mistake I made. After checking carefully later, the old one has no wear at all and I was just wasting my time. There is a nob on the parking brake that one can adjust
through the little window on the rear rotor to tighten it up if anyone accidentally dragging the car with parking brake on for a substantial long distance. And that should be enough.

Second mistake I made, I should change the brake line first by plugging a plug into all the lines rather then just let the fluid run out. Because this will induce air into my master cylinder and it will be a PITA to get it out. The right order should be :
1. top off the master cylinder.
2. Quickly remove the lines and plug the plug provided by the SS line package to the brake tube to stop further leaking (I was wondering what were those for ???).
3. Take your time connect the brake line to the caliper and so on...
4. Bleed the brake.
Other advice I would give:
1. Definitely get a breaker bar. It's only $10 at Harbor Freight and it unlocked so many tight bolts
2. Use a flare nut wrench to remove the brake line since the regular wrench doesn't fit as well and could easily round the nut.
3. One can convert most of his wrench with more leverage by buying those steel pipe from home depot. I made a 3/8 in drive breaker bar by combing an existing wrench with a 18 inch steel pipe. It helped me to get into the tight space
when removing the bolts on the rear torque members.
Last thing, the mechanic I usually went to quote me $750 on this conversion...but the great feeling after doing this and a place to share with my IS friends, priceless....

nice! when i did my brakes and ss conversion, i left the cap on brake reservoir, when i disconnect the lines, not much brake fluid came out due to i guess air lock.

Yes, this is on a first gen. And it is a complete bolt on. It even clears my stock 18" wheel with 20 mm spacers. The only thing you need to change is the union (banjo) bolts that connect the brake lines to the FX50 calipers as stated in Trubocad's DIY. The FX50 Caliper was designed for a flare tube and nut connection hence is shallower and the 1st gen union bolt is too long and would hit the bottom. You can check this thread to buy the shorter union (banjo) bolt from Stoptech: https://www.infinitiscene.com/search/1/?q=16369-My-Turn-for-the-Akebono-BBK

fx50 caplipera are bolt on for the 1st gen fx fronts
the rears is not a bolt on unless you buy 09+ rear knuckles

Nice job! I know how it is with Andrew. Before I met him the only engine work I have ever done was refill washer fluid, lol. I now can do so much more, but I'm still hesitant to do brakes by myself. Do you notice a significant difference from the upgrade?

I haven't got a chance to hard brake it (I did the bed in but only from 60 to 10 mph and not braking very hard) so I didn't notice a major difference yet. The brake is a bit firmer because of the SS brake line and I did hear some "hu..hu..hu.. "sound from the drilled rotors.

And I wasn't too comfortable to do the brake myself, so at the end I still spent $65 to get some mechanic bleed my brake to get all the air out due to "master" cylinder mistake and he also checked the brake one more time for me. I wish handy Andy was closer to me.

:good: Nice job Jimmy! Glad you did it all yourself. Great documentation on he do/don't and tips to help others out!

Just an update on how I feel after the upgrade.
1. The brake pedal feeling....it still feels pretty much the same as before until I brake very hard. So if anyone is looking to change the pedal feel the SS line doesn't help much. It is still that soft and mushy feel which is mainly governed by the master cylinder of our FX. I did feel a difference when I push the pedal all the way down, it is firmer at the end...but I seldom need to push it this hard.
2. The braking power...I didn't feel much about the braking power due to myself being a conservative driver (I drive with my two kids most of the time). I tried to brake hard a few times just to check it out and it does feel more solid (could also just because of the new pads and rotors) and stop faster....but I seldom need to brake this hard.
3. Any improvement? I did notice some improvement on wet conditions (pouring rain....muddy snow...) with the drilled rotors. It feels like the car start to slow down eariler than before. But still this could be just due to the new pads and rotors.
So the bottom line is, if you are not an aggressive driver, this upgrade does not buy you much, maybe it's better save yourself the money to do other mods. This mod does enhance the look a bit, but not as dramatic as the other BBKs.

Thanks for the update. I heard that a Euro brake master cylinder will improve brakes/pedal feel. Just wondering if it can be ordered somehow.
