Help! Ticking noise in front wheel

Never heard of bearing ticks before. I highly doubts it. Jack the front end and check to see if there is play on the axle half shaft.

So I took off the front wheels last night and inspected everything I could. Nothing appeared to have any obvious issues that I could see. I tried to fiddle with anything I could, especially brakes since some people mentioned they could make funny noises. The only out of the ordinary thing I saw was the cap you can tighten/loosen to help with the steering wheel wobble seemed to be leaking since it was covered in dirty sludge.

Anyways, after I spent some time moving the steering wheel back and forth and checking stuff I realized there wasn't much more I could do so I put the wheels back on. Good news is it seems the steering wheel wobble at high speeds was greatly reduced. I didn't seem to feel it as much, but need to check in the daytime when I can actually see if it's wobbling. I also didn't notice the clicking when driving up the garage ramps this time so who knows. Will just have to monitor and see if it comes back.

Does the ticking change with your speed? There's not nearly as much stuff up front on your FX that could go wrong. Could it be a loose tie rod?

Yeah, definitely speed related. I didn't hear it again this morning but I turn left going down at home, and going up at work so I'll check again this evening. Tie rods seemed likely since that's what changes the most when turning, but everything seemed ok when I checked, although I don't know what to specifically look for.

Maybe the ball joint on the tie rod? It's the part under the boot. I don't know if those even fail much, but it's a bearing.

Yeah I'm not sure. Hard to say with nothing obviously damaged. I'm trying to avoid going the road of just replace stuff and see if it fixes it, but it wouldn't hurt to replace some of these suspension parts either I bet. Looks like my passenger BC coilover had an issue where it looked like the bushing in the shock cartridge for the strut rod had torn and part of it was sticking up. I just pushed it back down in. Hard to tell since the spring is in the way and you can't really get a good look down into the shock cartridge.

Stu, just fixed a tick in mine. But mine was at slow speeds and going straight or turning. I thought I had a screw in my tire. Took off the tire and noticed movement left and right. Mine was the Timken bearing I had just replaced 5,000 miles prior. Replaced it again.. No more ticking.

I think the bearing is a possibility. Looks like the whole assembly is around $150 or less, and probably not too hard to swap out.

Stu, I can almost gauarentee it's the wheel bearings, I checked mine as did two other shops. No wobble either side to side or up and down. Changed the bearings and the click is gone, I guess sometimes they are bad just not bad enough to be obvious when checking them by the wobble, wobble method. Good luck as these things can drive you nuts trying to figure them out.
