Gas Gauge Level Fix

Yes, I removed the whole unit out. Thanks for the info, I'll try this method next week and report back.

Awesome!! My 2004 FX35 has been reading poorly for about two years... Two quick questions about this procedure:
--about how long would this take an experienced mechanic (read: what should my local independent mechanic charge me?)? Some say they have completed this in 30-40 minutes... any other feedback?
--are there any additives in gasolines that would retard/prevent this from recurring (when I was running consistently on Shell (nitrogen) there were better readings and when I went back to Costco the gauge started having problems again)?

Thanks for taking the time to put this together, John

Why taking it to your mechanic to get it done when you can follow the DIY. I would said 40 minutes at max. I don't know why this only happen to some and not all FX. My 03 FX45 is still good. My FX35 has this problem.

Yes I did this yesterday with 3/4 tank of gas in the tank. used a can of brakleen and an a eraser plus some cute-tips took only about 20min. Worked great. Thanks Again HA:good:

I would suggest to anyone to use the Brakleen along with an eraser to clean all leads plus move the float up and down just just to make sure you cleaned it well before inserting it bck in the tank.

great write up, my fuel gauge was acting funny. I use electrical contact cleaner not a eraser. It is the first time since I buy the truck more than a years ago that my gauge read a full tank. :)

Thank-you so much for this! =D My gauge was acting weird then just stayed on "E". Followed this guide about a week or two ago and it works perfect now!

Thanks for the Great Write-Up ... I will try this soon, as I filled my tank the other day, and the guage read that I was 7/8 full.

Couple quick questions though ...

#1 - If I was to replace my fuel pump, what type or brand should I consider?
#2 - Some pumps (on ebay for a quick look) I have seen say "Pump Module Assembly" or "Fuel Pump and Strainer". So what is needed?
#3 - If I was to replace the other side, Sender unit, Can someone post where I can find one or a parts # please.

Many Thanks, in advance ...

Dang, just filled up the FX, gauge only went to 3/4, looks like I'm doing this on the weekend.

Just did it again last week. Cleaned the contacts and adjusted the needle(level unit and fuel pump). Finally the gauge works as it should. This time I was using this stuff to clean the contacts and the needle:

After 3 cleanings, mine has quit again; back to using the trip odo instead. Screw it, anymore take-aparts will probably result in a permanent fuel leak. After 10 years, it's probably flat worn out.

I just did this the other day. Not as difficult as i was expecting, mostly due to this awesome write up, but i did get a little hung up on that lower harness connected to the fuel pump that definitely did not want to be undone. Trying to take it off with one hand while the other was holding the pump was by far the most difficult part of the whole job. Now i have an accurate gauge again.

Thank you.

hey andy

So i just did the cleaning on both sensors. Used about 5-6 Q tips. Everything cleaned up nicely but same issue. Mines tells me i have MORE fuel then i should. I know i get about 300 miles per tank. I'm at 305 so i should be near empty but it keeps telling me i have a 1/4 tank.

Any thoughts?

My pump isn't EXACTLY the same but the same setup just placed in different spots. I didn't have a cover on my fuel pump side sensor.
