Engine reving up to 8000 rpm while driving 20 mph

My engine rev'ed up to 8000 rpm while driving today. I was only doing about 15 to 20 mph when it happened. So I turned the car off and re started it and it hasn't done it since. Any ideas on what it could be?:eek.:

sounds tranny. torque converter. You still have reverse & all the others working OK?
& What gear were you in?

it wouldnt rev up to that unless your ECU was screwy and wasn't cutting it at 7.2k o whatever the stock limiter is...are oyu sure you didn't just put it into tiptronic by accident?

I am not 100% sure if I put it into tiptronic by accident. Would putting it in this manual shift mode cause this to happen. I am not familiuar with how it works. I assume it works the way a manual transmission vehicle would work but how would you shift between gears.

has your FX ever been tuned?? ... this is surprising ... doesnt the stock rev limiter stop the car from reaching that level of rpm's?? :eek.: ...

Not sure if it's ever been tuned but I don't think so. And as far as the stock limiter, I turned the engine off as soon as it red lined so I don't know if or when the limiter should have kicked in the stop it from reaching such a high rpm level.

hmmm interesting because even if you hit in manual mode would it be in 4 or second very rarely even doing 20 are u in first unless u were in manual mode and didnt noticed and floor it. rev limiter would kic in @ about 7000 or 6500

You could have moved the shifter into neutral by mistake? . . after you were moving?

I'm sure that wasn't it because I the car did accelerate a little when it happened, than i put it in neutral and turned the engine off so I could cost to the shoulder of the road.

so you purchased the vehicle used then? gotta have this thing checked out dude ... seems like the ecu has had the rev limiter removed ... did you ever hit the rev limiter bfore? did it stop at around 6500 or 7000 rpms previously or did this just happen?
