I know this thread is years old but I see you’ve had success swapping an engine out of FX with a non FX Engine

I fortunately I am having the same issues. I have a 2014 Qx70 AWD where I am being told that only a 2013 FX37 or 2014 Qx70 engine will fit. Although all of the FX/QX engines from 2013-2017 engine specs are VQ37VHRs per the parts look up 2015 to 2017 are incompatible.

Since there were no major changes during that generation I would think A 2015 or 16 engine should fit in my 2014 without any issue.

Maybe so, I'm not familiar with that line. But one thing the dealer did to make mine fit was they had to modify a line from the water pump or AC unit? I don't recall exactly but it wasn't 100% "plug and play". You might want to look schematics, drawings or the actual engine compartments paying close attention to some of the accessory equipment and how the connections are between the 2014 vs 2015 and 2016.
