Engine Replacement

2006 FX35 AWD
Has anyone replaced their FX35 engine? I need to replace mine. Pretty sure it's seized and I need to find a local shop to drop another one in. I saw a thread about one member replacing a 4.5 engine, but I want to maintain the stock 3.5L. Mine is a 2006 FX35 AWD. A few questions:

  • Would any FX35 engine from 2003 to 2008 fit? Or will only engines from 2006, 2007 & 2008 fit?
  • Can other Nissan/infiniti 3.5L engines also fit (e.g. M35, 350Z, G35,..)
  • Would any other years or models work
  • Lastly any suggestions on a shop to do this work in Western PA?
Thanks all

Sorry to hear your's is toast. You'll want an engine out of an awd FX. 2003-2008 should be fine. An awd G might work?

Thanks... what about the M35 is that a possibility too? Any suggestions on sourcing a motor or even shops near Western PA?

I don't know about an M35's engine.
A Google search for the engine would be a good place to start then go from there. You could call shops that are best known for performance oriented VQ's like Dynosty or Forged Performance where you might find your answer. Getting hold of the FSM for the FX and for the M35 and looking it all over for yourself is another painful way to go about it. You could also call one or several Infiniti dealerships and hope you get someone with 1/2 a brain and a willingness to share what they know about it. Going to a dealership and asking in person will get you further.
So, what happened? You say it's seized?

I actually have an engine sitting in my garage with 79k. All it needs is an upper oil pan replacement and I have that too. Not sure if I'm going to swap it or not because my engine still runs great.

How much for the engine and $ to ship to Pittsburgh then?

It had an existing oil leak. So I carry a 5 gallon oil container with me just in case. As I was commuting one evening exiting the freeway, the oil lamp briefly flashed on the display shortly after I got off. I drove maybe another 1/2 mile looking for a safe spot to pull over. Engine started making noises which became louder until it simply shut off. all of this happened in less than 90 secs or so. It would not turn over or restart at all.

Thanks for the advice. I did call some shops the other day, but either no answer or the 2 that did answer don't do this work. And unfortunately I've been in required training for my job all week and can not take the time to research and make calls like I need to get some traction on this. Pittsburgh is good in some ways not so good in a lot others. lol

Thanks Skagen. I'll PM you, but like on the move said. Total cost including shipping to 15275?

That sucks. This area that's been leaking must've just given way and went from a leak to a flow. Sorry to hear that.

LKQ has like 600 associated salvage yards, they will fit and be realistic on the mileage driven. Maybe warranted too...

No, I don’t work for them.

Does anyone know for sure if an M35 engine will fit in FX35? Assuming same model years 2006 to 2008 and transmission (Either both cars AWD or both are RWD)

So my research indicates that the M35 engine should work depending on the year and maybe several other cars too?

There are multiple varieties of the VQ35DE depending on its application. I believe there is a VIN code that needs to be matched. At the very least, you would need a RWD or AWD (depending on your FX) as our engines mount longitudinally, and the AWD versions have drive components run through the oil pan.

Thanks cbrworm. I ended up getting the M35 engine. I definitely made sure that the transmissions matched. And I know about the VIN matching too. The 4th letter in the VIN should be identical. For mine that fourth letter was A. Still waiting on some warranty reviews/ evaluation so engine is not yet installed. By the way do you own a Honda CBR?

I'll be sure to post my results after everything is finished.

I've had a few Honda CBRs over the years. I recently sold my last one, I don't really have time to ride anymore.

Hey folks, I wanted to update all on this engine replacement. So I finally got the M35 engine installed and it fit just fine. No issues with non matching connectors or errant codes. The only thing I wasn't able to re-use was the water pump. I had that pump replaced on my fx engine last fall and wanted to use it although the M35 came with one, but it wouldn't fit because of a bracket on the M35 engine. It's been installed almost a month now & I've had zero issues with the engine. It runs like a champ!

I ended up letting the local Infiniti dealer (#1 Cochran South Hills) do the replacement after calling a couple of local indies. I decided on the dealer because their rates were actually competitive and they agreed to keep the cost within my budget. I bought then engine from this dealer on ebay. It came from a high mileage 2007 M35. The specs I read on this engine indicated it has 275 HP & 268lb-ft TQ. vs 280 & 270 for the FX.

The only issue I have now which is non-related is an error code for catalyst, P0430. The dealer indicated the catalyst needs to be replaced. I'm not so sure though. I'll discuss this in a separate thread because I need to learn more about the right interpretation of the code and/or suggestions on sourcing the correct replacement part. :)

Thanks everyone for your help in determining the right non-FX engine replacement. I'm happy with the results so far :)

If you don’t mind me asking what did your total cost wind up coming to?

About $3500 for installation and $600 for engine. Engine was supposed to be $900. I could have easily spent $1k or more for lower mileage engine, but the value in doing so wasn't there for me. I also could have gone to a couple of Indy shops which had similar labor rates, but felt comfortable and reassured with this dealership which I've never felt before with any "stealership". And as I expected, they provided me a free loaner vehicle when the work took a bit longer (no fault of theirs). And when I had an issue with it a day later they corrected it (again at no cost) though it wasn't related to the engine work.

HELP WANTED
Hello
I know this thread is years old but I see you’ve had success swapping an engine out of FX with a non FX Engine

I fortunately I am having the same issues. I have a 2014 Qx70 AWD where I am being told that only a 2013 FX37 or 2014 Qx70 engine will fit. Although all of the FX/QX engines from 2013-2017 engine specs are VQ37VHRs per the parts look up 2015 to 2017 are incompatible.

Since there were no major changes during that generation I would think A 2015 or 16 engine should fit in my 2014 without any issue.
