Distance to empty

So last weekend did a road trip to Chicago and back. I've noticed this a few times already and am a little surprised by it. I notice that when the distance to empty gets down to about 70 or less more so when less, it drops inconsistently. Like I was at 30 and saw it drop to finally 0 as soon as I pulled up to get gas after going maybe 5 more miles. Just seems to be way off or right but then start dropping. Like it will say 60 then u drive 1 mile and see it drop to 53 or something but then sometimes stay that longer. Just curious if anybody else noticed this?

Thought u guys may get a kick of this photo I took when I pulled in a gas station.

Mine is 2010 ,but no problems like that. Mine is very precise and accurate.
Maybe you need update at dealership ? :smug:

Hmmm maybe it is 2009? Keep in mind though that at first I didn't pay very close attention and didn't let it run do low; maybe just noticing because I am paying very close attention and letting it run low. Plus u really notice it when doing this on the highway because u know exactly how many miles u are doing.

I have the a similar problem with my 2007 FX35.

normally when I get gas it will say 350 miles to empty.

but this couple weeks after I get gas it will say like 245 miles to empty...

anyone has the same problem here?

my FX will also do that jd. My last infiniti also did that on long trips. All of a sudden the distance to empty will drop drastically.

Hey guys,
I've noticed the same thing. My "distance to empty" would drop dramatically as well. Once I was headed to the gas station, and I had 25 km left, and about 1 km after, it was at 5km! I didn't think twice at that point to stop to get gas. I'm also very curious to know why this happens.

Mine does that's too. So do all of my other cars. Sometimes I think the MPG reader/distance till empty isn't really precise.

Oh this should be fun then...my G was quite accurate so I'll have to pay attention when I start driving the FX. I always reset the trip meter anyway to get an idea of how many miles I'm getting out of a tank so I try to go by that too.

You should have just kept on going and prove that little computer wrong; a la Kramer:rofl:

I would but all u guys are so far from me in case I get stranded! Lol

At 0, I filled up a tad under 22 gal of gas.

@Aaron, my dads expedition and Cadillac are much more accurate. I'm the type that likes to run the gas down to make fewer trips to gas stations than I need to. With the expedition, I would literally see the miles to empty go down. Maybe it would skip a little but it is very accurate. My wife the whole trip there and back were thinking to ourselves man the Japanese are good at a lot of stuff but not this. I mean we would see 50 miles left thinking we can go another 40 and then after 5 miles you are at 7 then when u get to the exit make a few turns and are at 0. Something doesn't seem right. I could understand if I was mixing city and highway A LOT but it was just highway cruising all the time so it's not even like the mpg should be changing. Plus I dulled out if it's going uphill or downhill. That's why I was curious if u guys noticed the same thing. :)

LOL!!!! That man was the master...My fuel lit up on empty this morning and when I checked the distance to empty it said I had 49 mi to go. After I dropped off my niece, it said 40 mi to go. Her school is less than a mile from my house. WTF?

Anyone know if running the gas near empty is bad for the car? I heard running it near empty puts strain on the fuel pump. Also that it's bad for the engine since there is always some sediment at the bottom of the gas tank, and if it gets near empty that the pump will pick it up and maybe foul the spark plugs or something.

on my '06 45 ill see that im getting close to empty and itll say 40mi or 30mi but then once the little gas light comes on ill try and see how much i have until empty and it just gives me 3 stars *** ....anyone else get this?

I personally dont even listen to the distance reader, and instead watch the guauge. Mine seems to be off often

I have that same exact problem...at first I thought it was the gas station. Was going to Hess, and then went to a Delta, the first time this happened. But I went back to the Hess and then it went back up in the 300's, but as of late it only says 245 ish..I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with the weather.

Yeh I thought it was the gas station first as well...i called the dealership and the guy just told me to reset the MPG so the computer and check the miles to empty again.
but after i got gas today still says 247 miles to empty...i got 20 gallons in my FX today! i dont think thats right....

Always heard running near empty is bad for the reasons you mentioned. These days with a bigger reserve and better filtration, probably not so bad... I don't ever go under a quarter tank, just out of habit.

I think the DTE figure is a product of the remaining fuel in the tank and your incidental fuel economy. Ergo, if the first half of your tank is spent at 55mph on the highway then your DTE figure would be higher than if your first half tank was spent on the drag strip.

:smile (2):hello all ,

can only agree i have the diesel fx anyone know what should be the distance on a full tank ,filled her up the other day initial computer said 510 miles to empty drove around 60 miles and upon arriving home computer told me average 30 miles a gallon and distance to empty 548 ,me thinks i have lazy software or this car is the missing link
mpg cannot be trusted, any clues would be appreciated
