Catalytic Converters Going Bad

I'm noticing this more too, but it may be also because now we train our ears to listen to it. Keep us posted how things turn out. I hope they find a resolution to this as opposed to just doing patch work.

Yeah you can definitely hear it pretty loud especially if inside the garage or a parking garage.

Sometimes I don't know what the purpose of a warranty is for if the dealer never wants to perform any kind of work. Kind of makes it seem like a waste to me. I've never even really used my warranty that much because the dealer never wants to do anything.

I took it to the dealer and they said this is normal contraction and expantion of metal.....

also they gave me a new EX with 10,000 miles and noticed after a little bit of time, it was making loud crackling noises.

my thoughts are if this is not supposed to happen....it's typical for Nissan.

Yeah that's what causes the noise. I don't know if you guys have seen what the inside of a cat looks like (I hadn't really until I installed the HFC's), but it's a bunch of metal wrapped in a cylinder. As you might imagine, the heating and cooling causes the metal to expand and contract. And where there's that much metal that close together, it can cause noise.

If you hear a louder rattling though, and it seems to get louder if you blip the gas, then that could be an issue with the inside of the cat breaking down.

Mil eliminators? Are those like O2 sensor extenders? If so, no I did not, and I did get a code saying the driver side O2 sensor was getting a bad reading. Will probably just have them turned off, as they are only for emissions.

These should work: http://www.z1motorsports.com/350_g35/product_info.php?cPath=390_399&products_id=3736

Exactly. O want to get very HFC but it will trip the check engine light. It just bypasses the o2 sensors. I wonder if there are mil eliminators for a 2009 fx50?

That link has some that fit the first gen O2 sensors, which might be the same as the 50 has.

Anyone else having the ticking problem? It seems like once I put my factory exhaust back on my cat's started this ticking noise, at idle and while driving and its actually pretty loud. I had to put my factory exhaust on because my check engine light was on and wouldn't warranty the vehicle unless the factory exhaust was on.

Tim had posted this on the first page:

That warranty btw is government mandated and good for 70K miles.

I have 47,800ish so I should be good. I'm pretty sure its the cat's that are rotted out but I don't think the dealer will do anything. I'll give them a call today and see, just hate driving 30 min each way for them to tell me nothing is wrong.

i had the same problem also of the loud ticking sounds, my friends use to tell me it sounds like my car is making popcorn, but after switching to invidia never heard it again..

True, I never noticed it when I had my invidia on so ill be excited to get it back on. Stupid stock exhaust..

Is the sound a constant tick/snap/crack/pop sounds then goes away after 15-20 minutes? Like it settling then becoming quiet?

how is the quietness of the fx :tongue (2):
Haha I hate it. Sounds okay when I'm on it but i think I hear the engine more than the exhaust.
Hey Jesse I got back to you
Yeah sorry, ill get back to you in a few.

Nope, once warmed up pretty good it constantly has the popping/ticking sound. I really think its the heat shields that wrap around the mid pipe near the cats. I was on a creeper today listening to it and I don't think its the cats. Like the someone mentioned on here before, usually if there's something wrong with the cats the cel light will come on and my dash is free of lights except for the seat belt and vdc once in a while :D
