Catalytic Converters Going Bad

Hey Jesse I got back to you

I wanna know I wanna know! :)

awesome...so this is just a good excuse for me to buy the ARK exhaust in the future since I'm about 3k miles from warranty expiration.

Sound is back today and it's louder than ever. Turn your volume up and listen to mine make it. It's so freaking obvious. Here is what mine sounds like:

Jesse said when he changed his exhaust the noise went away which leads me to believe it may not actually be the cats but the Y pipe making the noise which is why mine came back??? I'm not alone I looked on Myg37.com and some complaints about this on the G37 too. And I heard a G37 making the same noise mine makes. Some guy pulled into the service bay and it was making the noise. I also heard another 2nd gen making that noise today too.

I REFUSE TO ACCEPT THIS IS NORMAL. DEALER TELLS ME IT'S SUPPOSE TO SOUND LIKE THAT. THEN HOW COME A NEW FX DOESN'T MAKE THIS NOISE??????!!!!

I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO CALL INFINITI CORPORATE AND HAVE THIS SORTED OUT!

Dealers will never, or hardly ever, warranty a 3 year old exhaust that's in the snow belt.

True but mine was noted in the system a few years ago when the car was only a year old and they refused to accept it was not normal. So I have proof that it has nothing to do with the age of the exhaust

Yeah but what's the point...going through the trouble of getting it replaced with another x-pipe that will do the same after a year? aftermarket x-pipes are not expensive.

I don't want an aftermarket exhaust that's going to change the way it sounds.

I feel so embarrassed pulling up in drive through or parking spaces and people can hear the car making sounds like that. If a new FX doesn't make this sound mine shouldn't be making this sound. I'm going to call Infiniti this time. Last time they told me to in service to call and have an engineer come take a look at it and that would be no problem.

Bump for an answer. What do you want from them, Aaron? Just get one of these:
Magnaflow%20X-Pipe.jpg

and be done with it. It will probably sound BETTER.

Somewhat related to the thread: Would anyone happen to know the size of the nut that attaches the y-pipe to the catalytic converters ? Or even the thread size of the studs that are on the cats ? I'm putting my Invidia exhaust back on the vehicle tomorrow and I remembered that I had to heat the nuts that bolted the Y-pipe to the cats to remove the system. The threads on the cat studs may be a little chewed up too so I was thinking of running a die over it to clean it up. Any suggestions ? ?

Just wanted to let you know I called Infiniti consumer affairs today. Went through the whole process and a case has been opened. They contacted the service manager and my car is scheduled to be looked at on Thursday morning.

I"ll let you guys know how everything goes. Upset that it has come to this but hey what can you do.... I already made a deal with them that if they can show me a new FX does this in the lot that I will keep my mouth shut and not say anything about it. Other than that if it doesn't I want the problem fixed.

Well thanks for the update, I hope everything works out for ya. Try not to piss them off too much haha.
I know exactly what you mean about the ticking sound. I shouldn't be hearing mine anymore after tomorrow once I throw the Invidia back on. She's going to be purring like a real VQ :vroam:

Aaron I heard mine doing that noise yesterday, it was very hot out and I got out of the FX and left it running. I've heard it on other vehicles I've owned before.
I'm not too concerned about it.
Good luck with getting you're resolved.

Thanks guys good to know more people are having this issue and that I'm not alone. Not that I wish this on anyone lol. This has to be an issue because when I first got the car it never did that. So the fact that it's happening over time says that something is possibly wrong.

I have already mentioned this, but I'll mention it again....

I got an EX loaner from my dealer before and it had hardly any miles on it and it was making the same noise.

Something interesting I was told today. Someone said pebbles may be getting in between the heatshield and pipes. Maybe that's the crackling noise? Maybe that's why a lot do it then?
