Catalytic Converters Going Bad

Aaron, you ever considered getting new exhaust and/or cats? Just curious if you ever plan to?

You mean aftermarket? If yes then nahhh. I know this may sound dumb, but I prefer the growl sound of the stock exhaust. Not too loud and not too quiet. To me nothing beats the sound of Infiniti VQ's. I always find myself leaving the door open when I start the car up, especially on cold starts lol.

I also love the sound from inside the cabin when taking off. It has this really nice mechanical growl to it.:biggrin:
 
If you only had an Aftermarket exhaust. Invidia sounds amazing compared to stock exhaust.. imo . Hope everything works out with it and keep us updated like always.
 
I hear this on mine too, I asked the dealer long time ago, and they said this sound is "normal" that is all they had to say about it

Hey Jesse, you have Invidia exhaust? If so, what made you choose Invidia over Borla?

I just emailed Invidia asking them when they are making one for the FX50 :)
 
Just played it on my phone and I can hear some crackling but its tough to make it out. Is it both or just one causing the noise ?

Yeah had the invidia for almost a year now, got it from Gordon. Once I seen the video and pics of it on Mr. Lerrys whip I wanted it right away. I like borla but always thought they sounded better on muscle cars ( mustangs, camaros ect..).
I'm surprised they don't make on for the 50 yet. I love the sound of the invidia but once it breaks in the drone on the highway can be a little annoying. Overall well worth it and much better than stock.

Went in yesterday to have the dealer check up on the crackling noise. Luckily they heard the sound I was talking about. Upon further inspection they found out the catalytic converter heat shield were too close to the propeller shaft. The heat from the prop shaft was causing them to make noises. So they readjusted the heat shields further away. So far the noise has gone away thankfully.
 
So I noticed that sound today while driving....maybe because I starting paying attention a lot more now that you brought it up.

How would something like that need to be readjusted? Aren't the pipes in there tight?

I'm not sure how they adjusted it. The service advisor told me they just repositioned the heat shields away from the hot propeller shaft. It's near the Y pipe/cat area.

I still get a few clicks which is normal since their expanding and contracting, but just not as bad as before:tup:

Definately not the catalytic converters though that are messed up. The dealer told me if the cats were bad I would of failed my emmisions test a couple of months ago and the catalytic converters would thrown an SES light indicating they are running below normal efficiency. So it's definately the heat shields.

Thanks Aaron, but if they readjusted something, that would suggest the pipes became loose or shifted because otherwise if the pipes were like that from the beginning, then you and everyone would hear those noises day 1???
 
I have 2010 FX35 and its doing the ssme thing when i drive it for a while then turn it off it start the same sound ticking but i thought thats normal.

No, if it's doing that after you shut the car off that is normal because the metal expands and contract when it cools down after shutting it off. But mine was doing it 100% of the time while idling which is not normal.

I'm assuming that too because when I first bought the car it never made that noise.

I'm curious, why did you have an emission test done on a brand new car ? Was it for you or was it required by the state ? In Canada, the car has to be at least 5 years old to be required for an emission test.

In NY state it's required to have a state emissions test performed once a year on all vehicles on the road regardless of being new or not.

You have to also have the emissions sticker on the front windshield to prove you passed the emissions test.

Wow, talk about cash grab from the Feds! All cars that are 4 years old or newer will certainly pass 99.9999%
 
Just an update guys:

I took a 1K miles road trip this past weekend and the noise has returned from the catalytic converters. I dont know if its just me, but the noise has gotten worse than before. What im embarrased about is the fact you can hear it outside while running after being driven. If the dealer cant fix it, I"ll have to make a call to corp. to see what they can do. Dealer doesnt want to change the cats unless a light comes on and its starting to irritate me.

Next time I go back im going to have to tell them to have the master technician look at it.
