Catalytic Converters Going Bad

Hey you guys. I normally just read posts on here since everytime I write a post it kicks me out saying I'm not logged in even though I know I looged in cause it told me I was logged in......but whatever....anyway....

On this topic of the rattling, crackle, popping noise etc. under the FX....I have finally complained enough to the dealer that they actually looked into it further and actually fixed it. According to my invoice they stated this:

"Verified concern found excessive rattle from center Ypipe exhaust and found that heat shields were deformed and loose"

As a result they replaced the entire Ypipe/tube assembly and the noise is COMPLETELY gone now...thank God!!! At a cold start, warm up, idle at lights, up against a wall to bounce the sound off, etc. Under all of these circumstances the noise it totally gone now. I just wanted to share and hopefully this helps some others. That rattling noise was absolutely driving me INSANE and now people don't point it out cause they can't hear it. YAY!!! anyway, thought I would share.

Sorry guys. I thought I read through the whole post but apparently I am blind and read only four of five pages so my info I just posted about the Ytube replacement is not new news for you all. Sorry for the duplication.

Glad they were able to replicate the problem. Most times its, "unable to replicate."

As for the logging off thing, you have to be sure, "remember me" box under the login is marked.

Hi guys,

Im new to the forum and is hoping one of yall can help me out. My wife's 2009 fx35 just rolled 90k miles and SES light came on. After 2 trips to the dealership, they finally told me that it is my right side catalytic converter needs to be replaced. At $929 per on cat, im hoping that there is another solution to fixing this, maybe an aftermarket High FLow Cat or something? Have anyone here has this issue before? any info would really help. Thank you in advance!

Wouldn't this be covered under the 8 year unlimited mile emission warranty.

Either way there are no aftermarket cats for the FX. So OEM it is.

by the way what was the code they pulled from the computer?

Edit: nvm I forgot emission warranty expires at 5 year/50K miles

8 Years or 80k miles, whichever comes first JUST FYI. Apparently the cats are interchangeable with G37 and/or 370Z, per the rep at Invidia, but he wasn't able to guarantee me that it will rid the SES light.

code was P2A00. Seems like I'm the first, make sure your dealership does all the diagnosing before you take your car back, that's including MAF, o2 sensors, exhaust leak, and cats!

My cats are fine nothing is wrong with my car.

mrlerry on here tried the hfc from another car and it made it sound like shit. Stick with oem for now

By the way I don't think it's a cat problem on your car. That error code could also be for an exhaust leak or o2 sensor and a few other things.

when cats go bad usually the code is P0420 catalytic efficiency running below threshold

Hmmm....Infiniti swore its the cat, had it back there twice now. The SA wear his life on it, so look like I may be committing murder here soon. JK! I read this entire thread and saw that someone replaced the gasket and it eliminated the SES light, maybe I should try the $5 parts before buying a new cat hah?

so hard to trust dealerships these days....You'll spend $1k on a cat, they will fix that, find the light is still on, fix the exhaust leak or slap on a new o2 sensor and problem solved. lol. Ugh! I would shop around and see everyone's recommendations.

Aaron, what do you mean by it made it sound like shit? What HFC did mrlerry try and what it sound like?

Hello all,

New here and just recently purchased an 09 FX35 and experiencing the same crackling noise. Anyone else had any luck with the noise insulating clamps, and if so, how many and where are they located? Hoping Fire0nic3FX can possibly give an update on how the "fix" had come along a couple of years later.

Thanks!

Just an update guys:

I took a 1K miles road trip this past weekend and the noise has returned from the catalytic converters. I dont know if its just me, but the noise has gotten worse than before. What im embarrased about is the fact you can hear it outside while running after being driven. If the dealer cant fix it, I"ll have to make a call to corp. to see what they can do. Dealer doesnt want to change the cats unless a light comes on and its starting to irritate me.

i have a 2009 fx35. sounds like your cats. they are a common problem according to the parts rep i spoke to. i explained that both of my cats rattled and he said its a common problem with these cats. fucking nissan. i tried removing the heatshields in hopes that it would solve the problem and no dice. so now i have to fork over 1700 for my mechanic to replace. no i am not have infiniti do the work because they want like 2500. fuck them. i had a 2002 lexus is300 and never spent that much replacing exhaust problems or anything else for that matter. sorry for the bad news bro.

My cat also rattles driver side only the Infiniti dealer told me it was going bad and i problem wouldn't pass the emission test and that was over a year half ago its still working no engine light or anything,I'm just waiting for it to go before i replace it my local dealer talking $1200.00 But I'm going to order from a online Infiniti dealer $700.00 with core, then have it installed by Meineke for $122.00

Could that just be the heat shield around the cats rattling? I've ripped off a lot of shielding along my exhaust as it's started to rattle over the years LOL...

Yeah my heat shields are loose and rattling the dealer put band clamps around them to stop the rattling but they just loosen up over time they did tell me that cat was going bad also.

"Going" bad and actually "bad" are two completely different things... I'd just keep ripping off shielding as the rattling comes back till the cats are actually "bad"... Mine are nasty looking now but I don't need to replace them yet... And the second I replace them, Canadian winters will start killing them again right away!
