Brown Tires - Yokohama

i just washed my (hankook) tires lately and noticed that the side surface are brown only if you look close enough. i clean them with the same wash i use for the paint or a simple green mix. i always treat them with aerospace 303 water based for very low gloss.

A lot of the crappy mass market tire shines will turn the tires brown (I do not pretend to know the scientific reason). Generally, the higher quality dressings do not do it to the same degree, and most of the brown should be able to be washed off using car wash soap, water, and a stiff brush.

I scrub them with brillo to get them black again or bleachwhite if I have it handy. the reason I think it's the tire shine is I don't often use it, & the times I really notice the tires brown is only after I do use tire shine & it gets wet a few times & washed out a bit, then there brown...

It comes off in the wash

My Yokos get ugly brown patchy areas after using tire shine then not washing it for a while. Prior to using the tire shine the first time they were black. The brown does wash off though, also the side of the car that gets the most sun in my parking space gets browner. Not to be idiotic but I think the tire shine breaks down in the sun, yellows or tans if you will, leaves brown residue. I don't use wheel cleaner. I'm planning to change the brand of tire dressing to a less shiny one anyway, so we'll see. Best other guess is that it's some chemistry issue w/ the Yoko rubber formula reacting w/ various substances, sun, heat, dirt, cleaners, dressing, whatever, that's probably beyond us unless you want to have it laboratory tested.

On my last G35X the Pilot Sports always turned brown. The only tire dressing I use is Zaino. The Zaino looks good after the application but I honestly believe Zaino is the culprit as to why they turn brown when the shine disappears.
