Brown Tires - Yokohama

Whats up fellas. I am having issues with my Yokohamas where they turn completely brown after my tire shine wears off. i see tons of beaters around on the road, and even their tires look better than mine. i take good care of my ride, and clean it as often as possible, so i can't figure out what is going on. i've read recently about tire "blooming", where using too harsh of a cleaner can cause the UV protectants to be washed away from the surface. The tires are designed to release this protectant from the rubber over the life of the tire, and harsh cleaners can cause this to happen prematurely. I am wondering if anyone else has had this same issue, and what brand of tire those people are running. Any help is appreciated.
 
i have yokohoma parada spec-x's. the best way to keep them that nice glossy shiny black is to first clean them with soap and a sponge when you're washing your car. use on of the harder sponges. Then, use a tire shine like armorall that comes with the applicator sponge. then, use a spray-on foaming tire shine like mother's. they don't get too shiny, but they stay shimmering for a while before you need to apply again. another thing to consider is to get the tire protectact to apply after all of the shine, since it is waxy and encases the rubber. doing all of this will ensure tires have a nice black sheen :rolleyes: good luck!
 
well i'm not so much concerned with keeping them looking shiney. the Zaino perfect tire dressing that i use does an excellent job, and last a while. I'm just wondering what it is that is make them look BROWN. i'm not super concerned with making them shine forever, i just dont want them to be brown. i can deal with non-shiney tire, as long as it is BLACK

is it possible it could just be your tires?

Mine don't really turn "brown" except after a couple of days of rain or when i drive through dirt... and mine are 2 weeks old. Mayube using the protectant I mentioned will help
 
I think the tire shine itself turns brown, if you scrub the tire clean & then use no dressing on the tire I think it should stay black..
 
I said "I think", not once but twice, so, I think... if I was sure I would have left the "I think" part out of it:wink::tongue:

i have been using a turtle wax wheel and tire cleaner on everything. so far that is the only possible suspect. goes back to what i was saying about harsh cleaners. it says on the label that it is safe for all wheels and tires. i was just trying to figure out of this was the culprit or if it was just this brand of tire. i know a lot of people have these yokos so i was hoping they could chime in.

clean it with the same soap i use on the car, just a heavier sponge. then i use the protectant and shiners. tht's it
 
I'm pretty sure that my "wheel cleaner" dyed my tires brown sometimes on the Tahoe, I only use my sponge and soapy water on the wheels now. Sometimes I use Simple Green when it's really oily.
 
I think my plan is to go at with some simple green this week. Or maybe something designed ONLY for a tire (Mequiar's Safe D-Greaser, Whestley's Bleche White tire clearner) or just a suitable all purpose cleaner like simple green. i'm going to get a nice stiff bristled brush and scrub them down real good. After that i'll wash the car, and then do the wheels again with the remaining soapy water, then just dress with Zaino. Hopefully i havent done any permanent damage, and i can get them back to looking good again.
 
I think GChrist is asking once the shine wears off is anyones tire brown looking instead of black? Not how to keep the tire shiny looking.
 
exactly. I'm more than happy with the gloss and performance of my Zaino. I'm trying to get to the bottom of my brown tires issue when there is NO tire shine involved.
 
unfortunately i dont. having black wheels magnifies the problem even more. i brought my simple green all purpose cleaner, and plan on going to the car was at lunch to have a go at the wheels. i'll see how it works, and report back as soon as they are dry.
 
alright so i hit them with some all purpose cleaner, then scrubbed them with the self serve bay brush at the local car wash. i almost feel bad for the poor slob who goes in there next and is rubbing it all over his paint. Anyhow, then i hit the tires with high pressure soap, and a high pressure rinse. they already look 100 times better, although not yet perfect. i think this APC is the solution to the early tire browning problem. I am going to go at them again on saturday with a nice stiff bristled brush, instead of the long bristled like at the wash, and a good amount of elbow grease, and i should be able to get them back to looking new. lesson learned the hard way, dont put ANY wheel cleaner on my tires, whether it says its safe or not.
