Bored's exhaust - FX50S

Yeah I just did a little more research on the mufflers, and I don't think I'm going to go that route. I found the Borla exhaust kit for $600.00 brand new condition, never been used. The only defect? A couple of small scratches on the muffler portion of the kit, otherwise everything else looks like it's fine. Nothing that shows has any sort of scuffs or scratches. For half off, I think I can manage with some scratches.. :smug:

I think $600 bucks and free installation (with a friend who builds cars as a hobby) isn't too bad. Better than spending another couple hundred on different parts that may or may not have it sound like I want to..

For $600 I would go for the borla. I've spent around the cost of the Borla MSRP just messing around with my exhaust already... but I didn't love how the Borla sounded in person so I'm fine with going custom. However, if you just want it a little louder and much quieter than the muffler delete, the Borla will probably be just fine for you

other who have done the muffler delete but it's too much - try putting two resonators in and see if you like it.

I would imagine custom to be more expensive if tig welded then a mrsp borla. Mig is fine for the short run on SS pipe but it just doesn't last/ depending on your conditions ( salty roads)

Placed the order for the Borla. I want it louder than stock, but muffler delete from inside the FX is too much.

I'm going to try and take videos with the current set up, and then I'll put up a vid with the Borla

Viperi, I said "around" - I don't really need to share the exact amount. It was over the Borla MSRP - but you are correct.

Bored, you may be "bored" with the borla. Let us know how you like it.

MIG welding with the proper wire on stainless is fine; no issues with salt. TIG is better for penetration and such so if it was a load bearing part, it would matter more. On an exhaust, MIG is what will be done almost every time because TIG doesn't provide much advantage. I've had a TIG welded custom exhaust (because my friend's shop only had a TIG running at the time), but there were no benefits other than it looked pretty. If it were suspension parts or say a turbo manifold, that would have to be TIG welded.

Alright guys here's some pictures and videos. The first vid is stock cold start. Then the picture of the work with the pipes in place (I know they don't look the same but he made the bends on the passenger side because of a sensor or something that was there.) Then it's the muffler delete cold start, and the muffler delete in cabin, where if you listen closely, you can hear the vibration. The volume of the muffler delete is getting quieter over time, it was horribly loud in the beginning, but I guess I'm getting a little used it. Still putting in the borla though because I just want a nice aggressive throaty tone without it being loud as shit.

My phone tones down the bass some in these videos.. just as a forewarning.

I'm planning to sell my factory set up, the way it is. So if anyone is interested in doing the muffler delete but don't wanna mess with the stock set up, this will work. I'll post up an official marketplace post if people show enough interest and figure out a way to get it out. I would prefer some one in VA so that they can come pick it up, but if I need to ship it, I will. Enjoy!

I'm very happy with my custom kooks set-up, too loud for some, but I've grown to love it after break in. +1 for muffler placement, farther towards the front is ideal for killing the rasp, but be warned even with 4 high quality race mufflers and 4 resonated tips it still sounds very angry. I might try an x-pipe in the future just to see what tone change happens, currently running an H. Good luck, there are so many options and possiblities.

O, if u do end up going with a custom set-up, go true dual, let us know how the borla works out.

Probably going to end up putting the Borla on this Saturday so videos will most likely come next week. It shouldn't take more than an hour to put on, if anything.

Hey guys, quick question: does the muffler delete do anything or cause any problems with the engine turning over or is that another issue? And what does the muffler delete or another exhaust system do for extended warranty?

Muffler is the last item in the exhaust system. Everything that matters, engine wise, is upstream. Deleting it has no effect on the engine start nor would it void warranty. I wouldn't put it past a dealer to try to use anything to void a warranty however.

TapaTalkin'

Lol I had a situation where the drivers side window was behaving erratically and the dealer told me that it was covered under warranty, but since I had tint on my window it wouldn't be covered and I'd be charged if they had to open the door panel. Left, couldn't reproduce issue, didn't go back. Fuck dealerships.

Muffler delete voids no warranty nor does it have any performance gains except for weight loss, lol . You'll be fine. When I did it, I wanted to keep the flanges intact in case I needed to put the factory muffler back on.

Sounds good, I sometimes miss it - but it became a little too Bassy around town & too "muscle car" for me. Plus the cold start woke up the neighborhood.

Enjoy it!

That's the problem I'm having, a lot of bass around 2k rpm, and feels unnecessary. The Borla will be on tomorrow, so I'm excited for that. Maybe a 10hp gain will put me over 400 for this beast. :)

10hp gain is really only after a proper tune, and even then that's at the crank (I know, depressing - right) It'll actually mess with your low end a bit being a "true dual" exhaust setup with 2.5" piping as opposed to the factory 2.25" w/ Ypipe to dual exit.

Either way, it'll sound better.more aggro than stock, but not as ridiculous as the muffler delete.

Will I feel the mess up at the lower end? What does that mean in layman's terms?

It's an age-old argument regarding back pressure in the exhaust system... the less restrictive is usually thought to create the most power and be loudest. Although this is arguably true, if there is no restriction on the motor the low-end torque "feel" lessens because it's easier for the motor to push the air through the piping. So, you'll have more HP and maybe even more tq, but it will be at much higher RPMs and you will "lose" some low end "power"

In layman's terms, it'll feel a bit more sluggish off the line, but nothing too bad since you went to 2.5"... if you did 3"+ then you would feel it more.

People will argue these things back and forth no matter the motor make or model but I've experienced this with my old FX from going through a few different setups.

I also recommend you get some K&N drop-in filters to replace the factory ones. The factory intake system is already pretty good because it has ducts feeding it cool air from the grille, etc. but the factory filters are a bit restrictive/made to reduce intake noise.

let that v8 breathe ;)

(FYI look in my exhaust thread I just put an updated video)

Might end up ordering the K&N's online
