Finished the hid reverse light install last night. Took some pics during the install to share. MAIN reason i'm doing this is due to my dark tints (5% all around) at night don't help me seeing crap when backing up. Thank god for the reverse camera but that doesn't cover everything. The kit is 15w 6000k temp bulbs. Bought the kit from a ebay seller. Here are some pics of the install.
The actual kit.

Here is an example of the ballast next to a normal hid ballast.

To install the kit, you have to remove the hatch panel. First remove the handles using a flathead screwdriver.

Both handles removed.

There are 4 clips that are going to pop out when you pull on the hatch. 1st clip over one handle.

2nd clip over 2nd handle.

3rd clip upper right hand corner of the hatch.

4th clip upper left hand corner.

When you pull on the hatch these four clips will fly out fast so watch where they go. I used a flat head screwdriver to open the hatch a little the get my hands in there to give it a pull.

Here are the clips that came flying out.

This is what you see with the hatch removed.

Here is the wiring from the ballast to the bulb. That grey plug goes to the original reverse bulb I unplugged the plug and i cut and spliced the power into the new ballast.

Here is the wiring all tied up and tucked away. The two white wires go the hid bulb.

The install for the other side is the same. Here are the bulbs lit up.

Will post more pics in a different environment and a video of them in action.

Looks good!

hmmm I may do this too. I don't have good eye sight at night time and have a horrible time looking out through the back windows with the tint. May buy this....

Where does this stand in terms of legality? And yes I would also like to know how the temperature is.

A normal hid kit is 12 volts 35 watts. This kit is 12 volts 15watts. So the heat temp is cut in half. I had them on for about 5 minutes and the lenses were a little warm to the touch.

Legal wise i don't see anything wrong with it. Your not using it improperly. Your reverse lights are on only for a few seconds to a minute or two.

Just a FYI, if the new bulbs are not DOT approved, theoretically you could get a ticket for an equipment violation.

Either way, that's some pretty insane light you're throwing out. :)

You're right, John. It's one of those slim to none chances you will be ticketed. However, from personal experience, I have been on the receiving end of a ticket for non legal turn signals in the past. If a cop happens to be behind and sees it, they can use it as an excuse to fill a quota (not that they exist). I had hyper white/blue hued rear bulbs in my Pathfinder and a cop going the other way pulled a u-turn just to get me. :mad.:

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you since I want to see this mod in person too! =P
