I assume I need to remove the cover that surrounds the battery.

Do I need to remove the cover that is above it?

How do I keep power to the computer?

I have never changed the battery in any special way.. Take out the old battery and put in the new one, and I have done it over 4 times swapping in and out the braille. What about all the people that reset their ecu by keeping the battery disconnected over night?

i actually came across a pretty slick little number recently, can't seem to find it right now. basically you use wire a 9V battery to a plug that you'd put in your ashtray, like a cell phone charger etc. when you connect a 9V to it and plug it into the socket, it will give the ECU enough juice to remember the settings while you remove the battery. when your all done you just pull it out.

however, does the front lighter socket still get power when the car is off?

No problems when I replaced my battery and I did not keep power to the ECU.

Same here, just bought a 2003 FX35 a little over a month ago and the battery died. I upgraded for an Optima Red battery. Didn't keep power to ECU and everything was fine.

i guess the only reason to keep power to the ECU would be to keep all your presets, but thats not such a big deal...only takes 5 mins to reprogram all your radio and seats. disconnecting the battery without power to the car wont break anything:wink:
