I tried recording a video with my Samsung Galaxy S3, but the microphone is somewhat....shit. I think I'll buy one of those Blue Snowball Omnidirectional microphones and a wind-shield, that way I can capture the sound correctly.
I might set my phone up to record video inside the cabin and to capture internal sound and then attach the Blue Mic to the rear bumper and record directly to my laptop and then synchronize the two tracks accordingly. This way I can record the exhaust whilst driving, going up through the gears, back down through them etc. I might even take a drive through some of my cities finely crafted tunnel systems...
Anything worth doing, is worth doing properly.

iPhone is a piece of trash, Apple is foremost a marketing company. Smartphones don't have very good microphones, low power modules which have a very narrow frequency range and distort a lot when used to record sounds of great depth; ie my exhaust. I'll do an awesome recording at some stage in the near future with a proper omnidirectional microphone, I don't want to post a video that doesn't accurately represent the sound of the exhaust. It's going to be awesome!

Good luck with setting up the whole rig. I was going to something similar but my iPhone 5 videos were "good enough" to represent the exhaust imo - when I tried to use my DSLR to film it in 1080p it actually picked up too much of the engine noise/surrounding noise. Best way is to just have people hear it in person!

Do all your opinions have to be so black and white? And do you have to be so aggressive voicing them? We get it you have an opinion and you think it is better than everyone else's. You must however recognize that opinions are like assholes, everyone has one, and they all think theirs doesn't stink.
I am a huge fan of android, and I dislike the iPhone and Apple products to a large degree, but to say it is a piece of trash is a huge leap. The iphone does what they want it to do, and it does it extremely well. If it did not do so it would not be one of the best selling smartphones of all time.
By comparison, I dislike the very popular smasung galaxy brand of phones because they feel like those cheap fake cell phones you used to play with as a kid. I much prefer my premium quality HTC One. So everyone has their own preference.
However this is neither here nor there.
If you don't want to upload a video from your phone, go buy a shotgun mic and hook it up to any video camera and post that. There is no need to make this that complicated...

I think there's a trick where you can put tape over the microphone or something to reduce wind noise or whatever. Or maybe that was foam in a GoPro case, I'm not sure. Either way, no video is going to be as good as in person, and any video is better than no video.

i think that's go pro. My iPhone doesn't pick up much wind noise - but you can attempt to reduce it a little bit when making the video anyway. The problem is that the video sounds best on the iPhone itself - by the time you send it to a computer and upload it somewhere it gets compressed and the sound just isn't the same. My iPhone videos sound best played from my iPhone with headphones haha. By the time they go to youtube the sound is worse....
The exterior mic makes sense, but that's recording sound right at the end of the pipe, which isn't really how it "sounds" from outside the car, or from a few feet away/ a distance. Best is a video cam with one of those fluffy wind protectors filming from around 10 -20 feet from behind the car, from "eye-level". whenever I film too low I always pick up engine noise...

Funny, I knew that would start some interesting discussions. People are more passionate about their phones than their cars.
iPhone is trash, I stand by my 'aggressive' opinion wholeheartedly. I nurture a well established dislike of Apple both as a company and as a manufacturer. I don't find the Galaxy Phones to be cheap or feel cheap, they're made of plastic because it allows them to be lighter and thus less prone to gravity damage. I'm a nerd by nature, so I greatly appreciate Samsung's technical superiority and the open transparent ecosystem of the Android OS architecture. But no matter what phone I use, the microphone's on cell phones are always garbage. I think I'll hold off and do the job properly with an omnidirectional mic that was designed for the task at hand.

I'm going to use a Blue omnidirectional Snowball mic and then stuff it into a fluffy sound protector thing, i'll record the 'open' vs 'close' sounds from that distance. What do you think about location? Open field? Parking Garage?
When I do the driving sounds I'll likely head into the nearby mountain range and give it a good go. Just need to fix the Snowball to the bumper somehow.....

Best bet is open field if you have access to one.... little to no traffic is also best to avoid the extra noise. Open Lot/field with minimal crosswind is great for getting the exhaust sound, from maybe 10-20 feet away like I mentioned, and a simple "takeoff" / acceleration with the cameraman standing still behind the car or at a slight angle is best. Recording an exhaust is finicky if you you are too low or not right behind or too high you pick up engine noise or not all the bass or it distorts depending on the gear. it's quite annoying actually. If you have a road in the middle of nowhere or a private drive with no distractions, that would be best
for your video I recommend
- Start up and rev with exhaust in "quiet mode"
- accel with car in "quiet mode"
- in-car footage in "quiet mode"
Then all the same while in "loud mode"
also I would be sure to make sure the car is warmed up first so that you get the true sound and not the louder "start up" sound.

On the actual topic at hand, here is what I did for my exhaust vid:

Just a sony action cam, mounted onto the back of my car with a series of acceleration vids, now my exhaust is not as complicated as yours with the butterfly valve and such, so you will have a few more clips to show.
The nature with these types of videos, is that there are way too many factors affecting the noise that it is never going to sound like the real deal. It comes down to: microphone, camera compression, editing compression, online compression, and the end users speaker setup (which in most cases are shitty laptop speakers or headphones).
So even if you took a studio mic and recorded a high fidelity track, you could still end up with footage that sounds nothing like the real deal.
The other thing is, you just recently installed your exhaust, I can't imagine you already drove the 1000km's to break it in fully. Until that point the sound will be still changing.
With all that said, I am also planning on redoing a good vid of my exhaust, my plan is to again use my action cam, with suction cup mount on the back/side of the vehicle. Then, since my action cam has a 3.5mm mic input, I can hook up my DSLR's Rode Shotgun mic, and mount that on another suction cup and place that in a similar position to my previous vid.
