2009-2012 Infiniti FX35/FX50: Fuel Gauge Reads "Empty" After Filling Tank

This empty fuel tank bs is so annoying. It happened to me 4 times in the past 2 years. It's finally fixed as they have a new tsb out for this as this one didn't correct the problem.

really....

Do you have the new TSB or know the details of it? It would be interesting to know.

bumping old ass thread, this is very much annoying. no recall bs.

Anybody know if this would be covered under the powertrain warranty for new fuel pump even though its the gauge sending unit?

Reviving the thread after a few years, but this just happened to my 2012 FX35 at 36K miles. Service advisor stated the driver side fuel sending unit failed (the side without the fuel pump). Now he's recommending I replace both sides as a precaution (his reasoning is that if one side failed, the other side is bound to fail eventually). I'm tempted to just replace the drivers side to save on the repair. Plus there is no guarantee that the passenger side will fail. What do you guys think?

He's talking out of his rear end. I had the same issue except what was happening is the float on the pump side was getting caught on the bottom structure of the fuel tank. This occurred as a result of them using one instead of two springs on the fuel pump. why this is an issue? Let me clarify that. Having one spring causes the fuel pump to shift enough to allow the float to get caught on the fuel tank's bottom. If you can pull the pump up and back in just an inch it will release and you'll be okay. It will happen again eventually. How Infiniti fixes this is they take a new pump with two springs and install it. This allows the pump to stay centered instead of having one spring push the pump to one side. They have a new part number for the pump which contains two springs now. If you have warranty that's what they'll do or brush you off like most people experienced. I bought a stainless steel spring from Ebay, cut it to size and added it myself. I can post photos later. Have them do the driver side only but I speculate if they know for sure it's the driver side and not the passenger side with the pump. The error codes are unique per side but it's easy to verify with a multimeter so no codes are necessary. Itll be an ohm rating with a range. one side will read differently than the other. If you recall how much fuel you have you'll k ow the difference. I can help you with that. You'll always have time to fix the passenger side when that comes around. No discount whatsoever doing both.

Thanks for the advice. I requested to talk to the actual Technician this time (since the advisor really didn't seem to know anything). He performed a resistance test using a multi-meter and checked each contact point on the sending unit. There was definitely an electrical fault with a few of the contacts on the passenger side sending unit (not the drivers side as the advisor said....not sure I trust him anymore). The whole assembly (sending unit and pump) was replaced on the passenger side and I made sure he completed the TSB involving the second spring.

Still surprising that the engineers who designed the pump thought spring force on just one side was ok. Makes sense to me that it would need equal force from both sides to keep it centered....

All appears to be well now (other than the fact that my car smells slightly of gas now). I really hope this doesn't happen again, but I will probably do it on my own if it does, since it seems like a relatively simple repair.

Sweet! You're back in business. With a new pump and sending unit you'll be good for a long time especially with both springs. Nissan(Infiniti) is like that. They cut costs wherever they can. It might seem cheap but if you multiply the pennies it adds up pretty quick. But in this case, they made the wrong call. The purpose of the springs are to push the pump towards the bottom of the tank to keep it seated. Equal force on both sides keeps it centered.

Just sharing what my all data manual says. - TB12-075b for 2012-2013fx shows how to fix WITHOUT buying new pump. (I can share PDF if anyone wants) I will do this repair next time my tank gets low.

The 2 springs , 2 clips and new O-ring are 47$. I could save money and only buy 1 spring and 1 clip and skip the O-ring. Buuuut - Suggest replacing the O ring and I figure ill refurb both sides so the force is even. See parts list snip it.

Alright guys - I fixed it! It takes about 1 hour (30 mins if you are fast..) and 14$ in parts (2 springs - Infiniti part
17036-3GW0A
) and a screwdriver. The root cause is there is only one spring so it allows the assembly to get cock eyed and eventually binds up in place.

The fix is to remove the old spring and install 2 (instead of 1) NEW model springs so it pushes evenly.IMG_20200402_171013139.jpg IMG_20200402_173417485_HDR.jpg IMG_20200402_180249744_HDR.jpg (the new springs is about 1/4 inch shorter) BIG thanks to my manual for having the TSB, repair instructions and individual part #s so I didnt have to buy a new pump.

Picks included. I did this in the parking lot at my apartment, no special tools needed.

I have the TSB with full instructions in PDF. If someone needs it, PM me and ill send it. (not sure of legality of including it publicly)

How can I get a copy of the TSB with full instructions? It appears my 2012 FX35 just fell victim to this issue last week.

It's this Tb. TB12-075b for 2012-2013fx

I did a Google search and nothing came up. I got mine from all data diy (great resource manual for a small sum)

I can try and get the PDF and email it to you when I have time.

Play of the game right here folks!

FYI pay attention to the clip and no clip instructions. If you try and put a clip there you'll understand why it says not to.. hopefully before you put it all back together.
