2005 FX45 Gas Gauge Problem

I had mine fixed at the dealership, no questions asked. Out of warranty.

Chedman, what exactly was wrong with yours and what did you have to say to them? I told them my problem, which is the same as everyone's here, and they said I had to bring it in to get it diagnosed. I said Infinity certainly knows about the problem and if it would be covered... they indicated they never/rarely cover anything out of warranty. Appreciate any insight on this. Or from anyone else.

Thanks!

PS- I can only put 14gallons into my tank when empty... and it still only fills to 3/4. And when it hits 1/4 it often just goes straight to E in a matter of a mile.

I just got mine fixed today after 2 years. It got worse it always stayed on empty so called up consumer affairs complained and got my fuel pump changed. So far so good

Hey Mike, did you contact consumer affairs before your local Infiniti dealer? And also do you regularly get your FX serviced at the Infiniti Dealership? Did you buy it new or used and was it bought from an Infiniti dealership? I called in, told them my story, and they said since I do not get it serviced (oil changes) at an Infiniti Dealership (and I bought it used and not from the dealer) then they will not fix anything out of warranty... I've had so many problems with mine, AC quit working, 2 different sensors, this fuel gauge bullshit... And to fix anything on them its ridiculous. I'm not happy with Infiniti... Thinking my next car may very well be a Ford Edge...

Thanks for any insight.

Cheers

Aero,

My Infiniti, I know its winter, is getting 11-12mpg (from calculating miles and what I put in tank)... this shouldn't affect that at all should it? Last winter I think I got 15mpg minimum. The driving pattern hasn't changed any. In the summer I get a few gallons better and on the highway 20-21. But this winter has been terrible. And I've bought gas from different stations. Any ideas. Tires are pumped up, air filter is clean. I think the spark plugs are fine as I haven't lost any power. Thanks, Kyle

The problem you described sound just like mine. The gas gauge is not showing the correct level of gas in the tank. The gauge said its empty yet when to go fill it up it only take 14 -15 sometime gallon. Do a quick check when your gas gauge said its empty by open up the gas tank using the DIY AeroBFA refer you too. I bet that you will be surprise to see a quarter tank left. If that the case, follow through with the DYI and clean the floater arm contacts. Remember to clean the contacts on the other floater arm too. My gas gauge still showing the correct gas level since the DIY.

Cool. This is on my Saturday to do... Along with cleaning my MAF sensor, and changing my spark plugs. I read another post and the guy said he was getting terrible mpg (11-12mpg) and after changing them out it went back up to 15-16 minimum city driving. I'm getting 11-12mpg city driving right now. Last year was 15-16minimum city driving.

Where are the spark plugs on the FX? I'm not a super mechanical guy but I'm above the average Joe. I can manage my oil changes, air filter, tire rotations, and such. I tried to look tonight but to dark to really see... I do know that they are not anywhere easy... I tried an online search but couldn't come up with anything. Thanks a lot. Much appreciated.

I noticed tonight after filling up to a complete top off, that my gauge read only 3/4 full. This also makes me realize that once I was one riding on the "E" of the gauge and I only put 20 gallons in the tank and it read full. I have one month of warranty left and am thinking I should get it looked at. They will cover this?

well Im out of warranty , i bought the car used and i noticed as i drove off the lot to put gas it topped off after putting 20 dollars in, the pump stopped, and the gauge wouldn't read pass 1/2 tank. Then i started researching, joined this forum and got to this point. Im going to call the dealer and see if i have the same luck as the mod above and they'll fix it no questions asked. if not, I'm going to have to try and do it my self.

Man when did the dealer "fix" things? They "replace". I hight doubt that they will perform things like in the DIY. It's any easy fix. Try to do it yourself.

Mine has always done this too, I read somwhere else that the tank is actually divided into two parts and there are two sending units that average out the fuel capacity. Sometimes the fuel doesnt distribute evenly between the two tanks giving it an erroneous signal. I just fill it up when it hits half.

I found this info on the motortrend.com site;

^ That has nothing to do with gas gauge problem. That TSB is for fuel filler hose!
