2005 FX45 Gas Gauge Problem

My gas gauge has lost it's tiny little mind, same symptoms that the earlier FX's had, only 3/4 on the gauge when the tank was full, showing empty when there was still 40L in the tank. Called the dealer and he said nothing on TSB's for the 2005 FX's. Anyone had the same problem and had it fixed at no cost (mine is 2 months past war).

Ok it's the fuel sending unit. Gimme a sec lemme see what I can dig up.

Well I haven't found any TSBs on it. Most were replaced under warranty. Without an intact warranty you can ask your service advisor to contact Infiniti NA for a goodwill repair. Alternatively you can call Infiniti NA yourself and voice your concerns and see what they can do for you.

Only thing I found on the governments site (one which anyone can search at odi-nhtsa.dot.gov) is the fuel filler hose being cracked which would result in fuel spillage while refueling, which doesn't relate to your problem.

same problem on my fx, the sending unit and fuel level sensors are off . the extended warranty will cover it if you take it in

Had my gage problem diagnosed by the dealer as a faulty gage. Cost of the gage plus installation approx. $500 CND. They ordered the gage and I had planned on installation at a later date. Have been driving the car for two days and now everything seems to be working like it should, i.e. gage and screen trip info are matching. Maybe it just needed a battery disconnect reset???
Did give Nissan Canada Customer Service a call and asked if they would consider covering the repair as a good will gesture considering the war had expired 2 months earlier. Got a "rub a lamp" reply. Sent in a complaint with NHTSA about the gage and will do the same with Transport Canada (US car registered in Canada). Hopefully if there are enough complains Nissan will ultimately correct the problem at no cost to the owners. It is interesting that the part # of the replacement gage is different than the original.

I have the same problem in my 05 fx35 where the gauge will show half full. This leads me to believe one of the floats isn't working. The dealership said it would cost me $150 to run a diagnostic, and they would refund the 150 if work is done... The fuel gauge misreads about 50% of the time.

Yep! Same here on my brand-used 04 FX...i noticed the problem a week after i got the car...and its been only two weeks owning it...The gauge will say empty w/gas light on when its still 1/4 tank...

i have the sam eproblem.Gas gauge reads low.It goes down pretty quickly too.Sometimes when driving the needle goes down alot then it will come back up by itself.its really confusing lol.If anyone knows what i could do to fix it let me know.It would be greatly appreciated.Thanks.

same problem ***

common issue, you have to go to the stealership to get this fixed. be ready to pay out of your pocket though. that might be highly likely.

Is there any way i could do it myself? My dad is a mechanic im pretty sure he could do it and hopefully it will cost less? What is it exactly that needs to be fixed/replaced?Thanks.

i don't why you can't since it's just some mechanical work to be done rather than playing with the control unit of the car. Definite YES if the sensor that measure the DTE is independent of the gas gauge function.

What exactly needs to be changed?I've been searching but came up with nothing and I really dont want to take it to the dealership.thanks.

I had the same issue this week... I thought it was from when the stealership installed my new dashpad. I guess not. I drove for about 100 miles, stopped for gas to top her off and the needle went all the way to Full. Weird. I'm going to take her back in and have them check it out.

I have a 04 and it does the same thing. Sometimes it will not move and the gas light will come on. I count my mi. so I know when to fill up. Like I said, sometimes, so I stopped caring about it.

2008 and had the fuel units replaced twice already. So annoying...

It will either not fill up all the way (pump just stops), inaccurate gauge reading (usually only 3/4 the way up even though i just pumped 20 gallons into the car, or hover around the 1/3 line but then dip to super low out of no where (and it indeed is super low).

I had mine replaced summer of 2010, so far, so good. It was really annoying to me, there would be no way for me to just forget or ignore this issue, especially since I plan on keeping the car long-term. Seriously, there is no permanent fix to this? I feel bad that Pman had it replaced twice already on his '08! :err:

Wouldn't they have a recall on this then?

Also, if it was replaced, I would think that the new units would have the issue resolved?

Just curious...

I just got mine fixed today after 2 years. It got worse it always stayed on empty so called up consumer affairs complained and got my fuel pump changed. So far so good
