Lowering an 05 FX35 awd

Hey, Quick question.. Looking to lower my fx, this would be my first actual drop....can you just get the H&R springs or is it best to get a complete c/o kit?

Part Cost:
H&R: $250. Additional $250 for shocks and struts if your are worn.
Coilovers: $1000

Features:
H&R: Drop about 1.2" - 1.5"
Coilovers: you can drop it all the way down to where the tire touches the fender if you want and the availability of ride comfort adjustment to your personal preference

Which one?
You decide. :smile (2):

but dont forget coilovers arent just for looks, they perform so much better than spring/shock combo. You get better handling, car feels lighter and overall you could change the dampening settings varying on your mood

Makes sense, maybe I'll just wait it out then lol and go with the coils in the summer. Recommend anywhere specifically that I should order from (pricing wise)?

matters which brand you're looking for, i would recommend bc racing. Good part is that it doesnt depreciate much, and if you ever want to sell it; it will go fast.
Also buy it from an authorized reseller for warrant purposes

You don't have too many options, so brand barely matters.

BC racing isn't the best but the best option u have available.

Also don't forget the camber/toe kits if they have them for your vehicle.

Save money, get coilovers. I went with H&R's first and they were fine. But ended up swapping for coilovers after 1.5 years because springs never sit perfectly even and it's never low enough. I've done this on 4 cars now, get springs, then swap for coilovers when I should have just gone with coilovers in the first place.

I went with BC and it's the most popular option. But Megan Racing is the same; basically identical. I think Zebra sells BC's for cheaper than most places sell Megan's so just go with BC's.

Kido is another option, but they have a weird rear damping adjustment that requires an extender I believe. And there was an issue where someone's rear shock literally broke because of the design. He was running heavy wheels which may have made it worse. To get Kido, I think you would have to contact Chedman? But he's not a vendor, just helps people out. Maybe they have someone else now. Kido's big advantage is that they allow you to choose spring rates upon purchase. Maybe BC does that now, not sure.

Bottom line is there are only 3 options, they're all basically the same - made in Taiwan, same damping range, similar spring rates, similar price. All are mid-range coilovers, but for the FX not sure why we'd need more. It's not a race car so no point in $5K Ohlins.

you can also get fortune Auto coil overs for ~$1500 ish with th option to get Swift springs for another $300

BC offer swift springs too
From what Im told the swift springs are progressive
I should have got these When I got mine still might my BC springs are a rusty mess

Wish I had known that before swapping to higher rate BC springs. I like the BC's but just wish they were progressive like the KW's on my BMW. On max drop w/ BC's, I was rubbing like crazy because it kept blowing through the travel and hitting wheel wells. Higher rate BC springs helped, but it's a little harsh on small bumps now.

I personally dont like coil overs. They crack and strip and all sorts of nasty stuff. I have my FX 35 lowered with H&R springs kyb struts and 22" wheels for about a year now with no issues and always turns heads everywhere I go.

I don't regret buying H&R's in that they are a great product when paired with the OEM KYB shocks and struts.

But I do regret wasting my money on them especially now that I am looking into upgrading to a different setup, I wish I had just saved up and bought what I wanted from the beginning.

Decent coilovers shouldn't crack or strip; if you're running $300 eBay coils (not available for the FX) maybe that can happen. Even if you don't want extreme drop, I'd recommend coil overs. They help fix one of the most annoying problems with the FX, that weird rear twist/bounce when you hit a bump while turning. OEM shocks are underdamped and the better damping of coil overs helps with that immensely. Also, no more worries about the front strut bearing and having camber plates up front is an advantage.

plus you save money on the install with the coilovers; its a straight bolt on. The labor is higher with the traditional strut spring install. Or it (money) might even come to the same thing if you follow coilover diy
