FX35 Noise of Death

Hello All,

Hope life is good for all of you.

Have a question for everyone and anyone that is willing to help!

So, last week I take the (2003) FX35 in for an Oil Change and Serpentine Belt at my same ol' mechanic before heading to Texas for the week on vacation. The belt squealed like crazy due to it being too loose. I fixed that in Texas. No more squeal.

I start heading back to the mountains and maybe 20 miles out of Texas, I start hearing a loud noise that sounds much like an extra engine is sitting in the bay. It only happened at highway speeds (45+ MPH) but persisted the entire trip and has continued the past few days back in the mountains. Never affected driveability on the way home, just weirded me out. But now the sound starts around 30 MPH. It's a loud buzzing, humming noise and the weird thing is when I slow down, the car kinda sounds like a hotrod slowing down. Hard to explain and the video I tried to take doesn't capture it because I'm on the dang highway. I had someone rev it, and it doesn't make a sound until it's actually in motion.

I was driving home from work today and it sounds like the Wright Brothers first plane is taking off under my hood. My car also felt a little looser/less stable on the highway too. It could be my OCD, but I can't be sure.

It's a 2003 Infiniti FX35 with 78000 miles on it. 20 inch Koenig Lace Wheels. No engine mods. Running Yokohama Parada Spec-X tires that are 3 months old and show no nails or signs of wear.

I will take it to the mechanic this weekend, but I am guessing wheel bearing???? Typical. I just go on vacation, get my bonus anddddddddddddd it's gone.

Thanks for any and all help!

Yeah, I was gonna say wheel bearing based on the loud noise only when moving, and then when you said maybe it felt looser as well. You made it sound like something really bad from the title, thought it was going to be a blown engine.

Haha thanks for your input, Stu!

Not that extreme, but I was about to :eek.: my pants today when my OCD was getting to me.

Damn! Are the wheel bearings on our FX's somewhat prone to wheel bearing failure?

Oh well. Easy come, easy go.

Also, do I need to replace these like ASAP? Or can they wait for a bit?

Yeah, I think that's a common replacement item. I've never heard it be loud, but I've had 1 or 2 replaced.

I'm not sure about how essential they are to replace. Probably not needed immediately, but shouldn't wait too long.

Hahaha, sound like you have an extra jet engine right? I bet money that one of your wheel bearing is shot.

Seriously! It drowns out the real engine. Im driving it one more day and then will take it into the shop. Son of a gun!

Fair price for one or both? Im guessing spend no more than 800 for both and 400 for one and I can buy the parts myself.

not a hard install, had to replace one of my fronts about a month ago. took about 2 hours or so.... PB Blaster is going to become your best friend! :sinister:

Thanks for the feedback guys. It was the front wheel bearings that went out. Replaced both and did it for decently cheap.

Thank god I can hear the Bose radio now!

How much did he charge u for both P+L?
In my area, P&L for both front hub bearings going for around $600.

When I first started reading (after seeing the thread title) I was a bit concerned. Sorry you are out the cash but glad to hear it was only the bearings.
