Belt Change question

This morning I finally got around to changing both of the engine drive belts on FX45. However, I checked the FSM first before I did the job and it mentions only removing the the front air scoop over the radiator only to gain access to the top drive belt. But, I had to remove the fan shroud and unhook the top radiator hose as well, because the upper radiator hose had to be moved so that the fan shroud could be removed. Did anyone change out their drive belts without removing the fan shroud? If not, it looks the FSM left out a couple key steps in the belt replacement instructions. FYI, is you are planning on changing both drive belts at the same time do not install the top belt first, because it sits in front of the lower belt on the flywheel pulley, which mean you will have to remove it again when you go underneath the FX to change the lower belt. I learned that the hard way, noob mistake:rotfl:

So you changed from underneath? Did the FSM specify to do that? Maybe their method was doing it from the top, where that stuff wouldn't get in the way.

You don't need to remove the fan shroud to change the belt. Just need to remove the intake duct by undo the two clips on the ends will give you plenty of room to work on the belt.

I changed the upper drive belt from the top and changed the lower power steering belt from underneath the FX.

"Plenty of room" ? Have you done the belt change yourself before? It does looks possible to do it without removing the fan shroud, but removing the fan shroud gave me more room to position the belt on the drive pulleys and work around the plastic fan blades. Maybe I should have used a very long handled box wrench to turn the upper belt tensioner, instead of the long handled socket wrench and extension I used, which would have allowed me to use less room without the fear of breaking the plastic fan blades. Anyway, the fan shroud is easy to remove, so I may remove it again if i have to change the belts again.

"Plenty od room"? Yes, unless your arm is more than 10 inches thick.
"Have you done the belt change yourself before"? Yes, I have done many fan belts in both FX35 and FX45.

From your response above sounds to me your 04 FX45 have individual belts? Now that's odd. My understanding was that all 1st Gen FX45 is driven with one long serpentine belt that wraps around all the pulleys and idlers and I can reach down from top and slide the belt onto all the pulleys without any issue.

Does your 04 FX45 intake shroud looks like the pic I posted?

Yes I do have two drive belts. The longer accessory belt and a shorter power steering belt. I also have a white plastic fan attached to my water pump that sits in front of the engine drive belts covered by a shroud, however the pic that you posted is one that has an slimmer electric fan. Not the same setup. Do you have an electric fan mod?
