Hey guys, wanted to start this thread because ive been hearing and seeing so many people questioning about the 1st Gen FX reliability. Recently i met couple guys that were and still are interested in owning a FX. Some said they have googled about our cars and ended up on infinitscene. This site helped them so much that they bought a FX. So this thread is dedicated to lurkers and people who question our cars.

I've owned the FX for 8 years and it has never left me on the street. The engine and transmission work without any problems. Never spent more than $300 on a repair or constantly visited dealership for a fix. Recently i went on 2k mile trip and not one thing went wrong on the FX. Although my experience has been very good (it may sound biased) but some have purchased a FX that has been misused/abused and therefore had problems.
Hopefully everyone who owns/owned an FX on this site will give in more insight and their experience about this solid built car.

So far for me, bought the car last aug ( 8 months ago). Not a single problem with engine and drive train. Only thing that pisses me off is the cheap interior leather/ vinyl seats, rocking driver seat, and very delicate paint ( chips easy). other then that, amazing vehicle for all weather conditions and plan on keeping it till it dies then rebuild it up again!

The only thing that I've done to my FX that needed to be done was an outer tie rod end. Other than that just the basic oil and spark plug changes. It's been really good to me!

i have a 2nd gen and its actually the least reliable car ive owned, and ive owned an 04 range rover, i didnt have it that long so i guess i cant judge it that well but at least when i took it back to the dealer they got the issue fixed the 1st time...i have a 2010 fx and it always had something that needed fixing and i have this 1 issue that they cant fix which is my car starting which i actually asked about on here recently, maybe im a lil upset because i went japanese for reliabitlity alone, was actually looking at an x6 but opted for the fx instead and this is what i got the most issues ive ever experienced with a car

^ thats a shame. Based on FX reliability reports for both 1st and 2nd gens you most likely puchased one from the slim margin of rides with issues. The BMW would have surely had more than its share of issues.....

honestly i think its always a coin toss, no matter what u buy theres always some bad in the batch, all the people that i personally know that complain about bmw's are out of warranty, like their built to fail and 50,000 miles lol, my most reliable car suprisingly was an 08 escalade which my only major problem were the locks not responding to my remote on 2 different occasions which were fixed both times under warranty, gm claimed that was a common issue with their trucks

I'm on the fence on this one. I've had a lot of issues with mine.

- throttle body went bad, replaced under warranty
- I've had 2 door lock actuators go out
- still get a u1000 code every once in a while. Car goes into severe limp mode.
- currently wheel bearings are going out
- rocking driver seat, replaced under warranty first time but starting again
- seat belts are very slow to retract, replaced under warranty but starting again
- cd player replaced due to skipping and cutting out speakers
- currently my passenger side mirror doesn't work when its hot outside, going to have to replace this

-others complain about strut bearings going out.
- others bubbling dash

Even with everything I've had, I still love this car.

I've owned money since late '07, and in that time the only issues I've had are the common ones that I consider to be extremely minor, which are:

-Left rear lock actuator had been flaky in hot weather for quite some time. It has yet to give out completely but I think it might soon.
-CD player skipping/left side cutting out problem has been intermittent for a couple years. Its so sporadic though that its never really bothered me.
-creaking driver's seat just started in the last month or so.

Over the last 4.5 years and close to 50k miles I have maintained the FX perfectly and have never had any sort of mechanical failure. It is BY FAR the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned.

I needed new wheel bearings at only 70,000 miles.
Not a cheap repair, but I'm sure it will be the first/last set I will need to buy.
I had read about this problem online before it occured so I wasn't too suprised.
Other than that... no issues.
Great car.

what do u think of mb vs bmw as far as reliability and cost to maintain ? im thinking of an 09 750li a 535i or a 10 mb e350

I have owned two FXs. My 2003 FX only had two issues in the three years I owned it (CD player completely screwed up somehow), which ended up with Infiniti replacing the entire unit in the dash for free, and a knocking sound in the front fender area which Infiniti also fixed. My 2006 FX hasn't had any issues at all, and I am approaching one year of ownership. It is extremely reliable in my opinion. I never have to worry about anything, and all of my other cars I have owned have left me worried at times.

As for German cars being reliable or not, I owned a 2005 Beetle Turbo GLS and put around $5000 into it in repairs. It was beginning to be a money pit, so I sold it once I had everything fixed. Needed a bigger, more reliable car.

I've had my 03 fx35 since 2006 and 26k, it currently has 196k and is still going strong. The 03s are known to burn oil and mine is no exception. I had an overheating problem at 165k and elected to have the head gaskets done-not cheap, but worth it because the car still drives well and has a pretty decent value according to kbb even with the miles. Other than the heads not much has gone wrong. I replaced something with one of the windows and the CD player doesn't work anymore, but everything else has been routine. That being said, i don't doubt german reliability. We've had many BMWs in my family and they've never been anything but reliable. I'm currently struggling with what to replace the FX with because as much as i love it i want an SUV with a bit more utility, but it's scary to think about giving up infiniti reliability.

Had my 2007 G and the only problem was the paint on the door switch cover and the steering wheel colum was easily scratched off. Easy fix though. Oh I did have to black out my front grill because of rock chips would put black spots through the chrome paint. Other than that, just oil, gas and tires ;)

My FX is a money pit...mod money pit...when you don't have issues it goes towards mods.

/\ :tongue (2):
Iv'e had my 04 since 08 and have 98,000mi on it with no major issues whatsoever. I replaced the shocks and struts at 75,000mi but they were still good I only changed them out because I had them off to install the H&R springs. Like jdTrader said more spent on mods than repairs:top::top:

Oh almost forgot had to replace the battery around 80,000mi.
