Thinking about tracking the FX...

So I'm thinking about tracking the FX, thoughts about getting another car like a Miata, 350Z, or S2000 have crossed my mind to but I think I want to give this a shot. I've tracked before but that was with bikes and have no idea how tracking the FX might be. Any tips or suggestions for those that have tracked their FX before?

It's heavy, understeers, and you will get made fun of. Otherwise it's awesome. I always enjoy seeing who I beat and how far I am off of other cars.

thats the funny part, i'm about to get a license plate that says "FATHPPO" to for those whom I'm capable of passing can see that they just got passed by a FATHPPO, and those that do pass me won't feel like they accomplished anything because they just passed a FATHPPO lol. All jokes aside have you found a way to counter the understeer? Heaviness is a given...I'm about to sell the 3-piece wheels for mono blocks

I have added the GTspec mid chassis and rear sway, but have not done any events since. I'm talking about AutoX specifically though. I would except a true track event to be a little better as the surface will be more predictable, and turns are usually less sharp since everything is more spread out and open.

I really want to try out my new setup now. Oh, and get R888's on a spare set of GT-R wheels, but that's mostly wishing.

The one thing I wish I did better during my track experience in the FX was to have been smoother. I lost a lot of momentum when I entered a turn way too fast and had to brake during the curve. That one mistake cost me all the good I had been doing for the past few laps. Never recovered from that.

Like Stu said, you will be heavy, slow and understeering. But it will be a BLAST and you'll have the time of your life.

Here's the post I did for my time at Lime Rock.

I like VRYSLW more. :)

During the Hell, MI run, my FX kept up with the lowered and moded M3s and 350/370Zs. There were many turns, lots of acceleration, braking, and the FX took some air at least once. They were all shocked afterwards I kept the whole time on their asses but I did really push it. Of course I was in sport mode and DS mode the whole time.

my my thank you everyone for the input. as for wheels I'm still thinking about a set of 22" mono blocks, i know its going to be heavy as heck although running GTRs or a lighter 20" set of wheels would be very nice too, still debating because I don't feel like sitting on two sets of wheels.

GTSpec stopped selling the under braces and I was hoping to get those too. I might have a set of custom coils made since we only have springs and that's going to suck at a track.

@Aiya, were you able to keep up with some cars on the track at all?
@jdTrader, I kept up with a few cars too in a canyon but a track will be a completely different story for me...VRYSLW indeed!

With my friend i went to the track last year, porsche cayenne turbo s and x5 m. They are both heavy cars and some curves we made it while speeding 90-130, but the tires were screaming on both of em. It was fun but the porsche oversteered many times.

Turbo did a ton of suspension work and had a professional driver take his FX on the track with favorable results. I think he was running his 22's. His thread is too long to find it for you..

Bracing removed the understeer from my setup.
Are you lowered?

yeah, fx is a heavy beast and it will want to understeer like crazy, adding a lot of rear spring rate and stiffening up the rear a lot can help a lot, lowering and stiffening it up in general will help too, ideally you want to get the rear of the fx to be much more loose traction wise than it is relative to the front... not so easy but a set of coilovers can make this much easier assuming you can take care of alignment issues too. when you got it right then instead of plowing through the turns you'll just have to worry about pushing it too hard and rolling it or spinning the ass out :) when you can get it to spin the ass out you're on the right track :)

also if you are going to want to do this several times a season then separate track wheels is a good idea, you will def chew up your tires

yeah its on eibach's right now but i won't take it to the track unless coils are on the car. too bad gtspec stopped making the braces

yeah i'm trying to get those coils on the car somehow wherever they may be coming from. stiffening up the rear sounds like a good idea, except alignment issues will get me since theres nothing still...what do you think about running a square set up instead of a staggered set up?

Track tires are definitely a good idea.
Wow, that picture brings back some memories. Too bad those wheels are long gone :(

I wish i could use my motorcycle helmet =(

Since I was in the novice group, a lot of people were not able to pull away and only one car (BMW 135) lapped me the entire day. The FX shined coming out of a turn into a steep uphill. The torque of the 45 actually had me pulling away from cars on that bit.

I used my motorcycle helmet for the track. The Shoei RF-1000 passed tech inspection just fine for me.
