Catalytic Converters Going Bad

What's the laundry list?
I think Aaron always has a big list when he takes his FX in. They probably shudder when they see him come in. :wink (2):

I'm just teasin ya Aaron, it's good you find all these TSBs etc for all of us. It is appreciated.

yes yes YESSSSSSSSS!! Finally got this fixed today. Went in for service and as soon as I pull up in the drive bay the service manager comes out and he hears the noise. I dealed with the manager today since he's in charge since a case is open with Infiniti to get this fixed. Finally they agree with me that it shouldn't be making the noise during idle and only should make crackling noises when it's shut off since it's cooling down. But mine was making is all the time. They automatically pull it in and put it up in the air and find the noise coming from the Y pipe not the cats. They said the heatshields were doing it. They told me only two ways to fix it. Replace the Y pipe with a new one since the heatshield is part of it and eventually it would come back again, OR make a permanent repair so it won't make it ever again. So we went with that route. They added 6 noise insulation clamps I believe around the heatshield to different parts of the Y pipe. Drove it and the noise is ALMOST completely gone. Every now and then you can slightly hear it, but the noise has been reduced about 95%.

Here is a copy of my invoice so you guys that have this issue too can get it sorted out.

It's definately not normal. If your saying you hear other Infiniti's doing it that means it's a common issue and a design flaw of the Y pipe. Not enough clamps that support it. When you bought your FX I don't think it says anywhere on the window sticker that exhaust crackling noises come with it.

Cool! Good thing you got this fixed! Can you post the invoice showing that you have a 2009 FX and maybe blank out your name and that kind of info?

I don't think mine does it while turned on, but as it's getting hotter, I'll pay attention now that I have something and then see.

Thanks Aaron; as always you are awesome for the iS community.

No problem man I'm just glad I had this taken care of. Now Jesse and a few others can get this issue fixed. It's been so annoying for the longest.

:banghead:

Do you have any pics of their repair?

no

But after the mechanic completed the repair he showed it to me when it was up in the air. He put 6 of these metal clamps that your adjust with a bolt attached to it wrapped around the heatshield. Don't know what their called though..

I just read this whole thread and can't wait to go back to the dealer and complain about this issue AGAIN. Funny thing they gave me the same excuse and yesterday my girlfriend noted the ticking while driving and stopped at a light and I thought it was just me...

Go back and show them the invoice I provided you in this thread. If they still refuse call Infiniti Consumer Affairs.
