Annual Midwest Spring/Fall Area Meet in Chicago

Yes I like the Kilt, we should do that then have a keg party at my crib, plenty of parking, big church lot backs up to my place

The only thing is the Mayweather vs Canelo fight is on that night too... Not sure how many boxing fans are coming but that's a fight not to miss...

Boxing fan here too! But should be okay since it's the main event...I usually don't watch the other fights on the ticket.

Likewise here man.... But we have a friend, Carlos Molina, fighting in an undercard fight that I want to see fight. He's been around for a while but is finally getting some recognition.

Fight night, crap, will be outdoors but the invite is out, fire beers and some good times. Maybe not a keg, lol... This all day and night event has got me excited like a boy before Xmas. All out or nothing, iSpalooza!

Maybe we should do the rolling shoot before or part of the meet and greet time? #1 There will be significantly less traffic which is essential and #2 if we have 20 FXs and only 3 or so DSLRs, what are the other FXs going to be doing? #3 Lighting would be better. Doing photo shoot at high noon may be bad if it is a very nice day. I think people will start to get bored very very fast too given # of DSLRs and passengers. Unless....this is really the highway cruise and rolling shots just becomes possibly part of it, but that may not work either because the photographer needs to be as a passenger. So, for example, someone would need to be driving my car while I take pictures of other FXs or I am in another FX taking pictures of my car / group of FXs.

Either way, I think it's very important to be 100% organized before the meet starts especially considering the size of the group.

I'm okay with meeting up early for the rolling shoot especially since not everyone may want to participate and if they do then they have to get up as crack of dawn?

I think we should do a park or find places we can take pictures and do a strategic highway cruise all over 11:30pm - 1:30....and then end at the car show....then people can relax and then leave when they want to from the car show instead of doing the highway cruise at the very end.

I've really been out of sync with the chicago suburbs so I'm not sure where to take pictures or cruise or whatever....if you guys were in michigan I would have suggestions :)

Early photoshoot is a great idea. Lighting will be better for sure. Unfortunately I wont be able to make it, since I will be driving from WI that day.

I agree Jonas. Seems like you have been thinking this through! The rolling shots should be the early crowd for the reasons Jonas mentioned. Crowd is too big for the city for really anything IMO.

As far as cruising goes. It'll unfortunately be the further from the city the better traffic wise. Ideas are welcome. May change original eating spot? I don't know. Seems like rolling shots for those interested should be super early. But aside from that I just don't know. I'm concerned a lot of time will be wasted if stay downtown....driving around looking for parking...trying to coordinate will be hard especially for those from out of town.

We should try and get a legit plan together though. The Phoenix restaurant could work for a good size crowd...pizza could probably work too? Suggestions? Those from out of town yell what you want!

Let's keep the original food spot, they have plenty of parking down there and the service wast fast last time we've been there, and then we can drive towards the burbs after that.

Nice. Will need to go back to WI earlier that day and won't be able to attend.

Rolling shots in the city is not a great idea imo. Lake shore drive has a nice view, but it's too far away to depict movement. City streets would have a closer background, but then that gets dangerous and not to mention the potholes, construction etc.

Rolling shots should be in the burbs. There's a section on 290/53 with a retaining wall n the background. Further on 355 presents the same background.

Seems like it would be best to meet up in the burbs, eat and then do the shots. Hang out afterwards with some beer, brats, curds or whatever. I'm sure there's a good breakfast joint by Schaumburg area.

Burbs will work better for for us as far as cruise and photo shoot. Any suggestion for a rolling shots? We need a smooth highway with light traffic.

Lets tweak the schedule. Any ideas or suggestions?

How about this....

Last time what time did we get to the restaurant? I think around 11am right because we waisted a lot of time from the FXs that lost the first set of FXs? When we got to the restaurant, we were basically the first ones and the parking lot was empty and given that it's a paid parking lot, early afternoon should be easy to park lots of FXs.

So how about this...

8:00am-8:20am we meet at the planetarium. By 8:30am SHARP, we leave to do rolling photos and any other morning photos we want. I think we may be able to do rolling shots on Lake Shore especially farther down where there are multiple lanes. Would rolling shots on Lake shore saturday morning that day 8:30am - 10:30am be doable?

2 hours should be good. Plus with lake shore we'd get the wall and lake and city skyline all in the rolling shots. Should be really fun. Obviously some cruising will be happening at this point. At 10:30am we wrap up and start moving towards the restaurant. So we meet at the parking lot 10:45am-11am. I think the restaurant gets busy (and parking lot) around 11:30am-12:20pm. So we would be the traffic to eat.

This would allow anyone in the morning that is interested to participate, to participate even from Wisconsin without worrying about parking issues. Those not wanting to participate in the photoshoot and/or rolling shots can just meet at the restaurant parking lot 10:45am-11am for some quick pics or restaurant directly at 11:15am-11:30am.

Eat 11:30-1:00pm. Then highway cruise to the car show that begins around 1:30pm.

After the schedule is finalized we need to organize the rolling shots to see who will be there etc....we need extra passengers to come along to help the photographer's FXs cruise and be part of the rolling shots as well. For instance, one great candidate would be Andrew that can come along with Andy to drive Andy's FX or my FX, but we need more drivers as well since I think at minimum Andy, myself, and Zebra will be taking rolling shots...maybe Andrew and others too, not sure....speak up if you are interested in being a key photographer in the rolling shots.

I don't know if lake shore is an ideal rolling shot spot. Background won't really be that blurred because its the lake....and lake shore has a decent amount of turns and stuff? Thought we wanted an easy straight shot for rolling shots?

I'm interested in ATTEMPTING rolling shots. But will need to be taught as I a not as advance as the others! But if I suck I can bring my camera and someone better could use it no problem

There is Hooters in Schaumburg that a lot of car enthusiast go too. Perhaps, we can get rolling shot while in route, plus that will cover the model aspect. LOL

Last I heard the manager of the hooters and kilt instructed their staff to go outside for picks with cars with their work attire on. And no, naked is not what they meant.

Maybe we should then split up the hours. 1 hour for morning and 1 hour do rolling shots on the highway to tilted kilt?

I tend to go for very challenging situations...Lake Shore drive is a bad scenario for various reasons including the fact that the speed limit is 45 I think and to get good rolling shots you need to be going typically 55 or more (faster the easier). Although what I'm interested in is the background of downtown. It's hella challenging and that's what I like, but the rewards are big if it turns out. One positive note is LSD is 4 lanes wide which is a big plus....we could drive all the way north to hollywood and then take 90/94 back for some possible rolling shots on the highway too going back for lunch doing one big circle. Doing this should probably take no more than an hour I would think.

Although I have no idea how busy LSD drive is 8:30-9:30 in the morning on a saturday. If it's normally busy than that will kill it no matter how challenging.

I'm pretty sure all of us are amateurs or have not done rolling shots before....I know I haven't. I have some ideas but I may go with a completely different strategy once I take a look at some pics I take.

I think key is being able to adapt to the scenario you are running into at the time....not necessarily here are the settings, stick to them type thing. So my advice would be have a strategy in mind, take some pics, and quickly evaluate through your camera how the shots are coming out....are they coming out the way you want them to and then go adjusting from there. I do this frequently as I take shots.
