Ok, so I put Chevron gasoline in my FX. I think it's good gasoline and much better than Arco. I have a friend who has the "Gas is Gas" mentality. How can I prove to him that "Gas is Gas" is a no go?

Any ideas, let me know. Here is a poll.

do you use:

- Chevron
- Arco
- Mobil
- 76
- Valero
- Shell

Beyond popular opinion, I actually find ARCO performs better than all those that I've tried. It's BP though, so thinking about switching

I usually Chevron/Texaco. but on a bind or prices are jacked, QT/RaceTrack. I feel guilty using the lower grade stuff. But i read that all the fuel comes from the same refinery, but some companies put additives in while the fuel is transported.

Even those off brand gas has the least amount of additives or cleaners required by state law. brand names tend to research and add different cleaning agents that exceeds the requirements. Personally I do not approve the current trend of adding up to 10% ethanol in gasoline. I use Shell V Power, always have, and sometimes I buy Exxon.
Here's a few things people aren't fully aware of:

when unloading gasoline, if the underground tank for regular gas becomes full and there's gas left in the truck, those delivery guys will just mix it with super unleaded. Also
a person with multiple stores (e.g. a Valero and a shell stations) may order gasoline from the refinery that supplies to Valero but have them deliver the gas to his Shell station.
Now i don't know how much the octane ratings go out of whack in these cases but at least it's a given that even the name brand fuel stations screw around.

I've always played the gasoline game.
I usually use 76 or Mobil. Chevron and Shell are great also. I never use Arco or Valero, (unless in a rental . . . or stolen.)

Something else to keep in mind:

1) Independent gas stations will buy surplus from suppliers of their choice. For example, Mobil (as an example only) will first provide for their franchises. Any surplus, and there generally is one, will go to independents. Because independents are basically on 'stand-by', they may or may not get their first choice delivery. But when they do, they buy the same name brand gas from the same truck as name brand franchises. At the end of the day, "Independent Joe's" may receive Mobile, or their other choice, 76. In my experience, independents usually buy from 2 suppliers, sometimes 3. If you ask, they'll tell you who. Whether they BS you or not is out of my control. Independents are not allowed to advertise the name brand to be fair to franchises. I will gladly purchase from independents that I trust supply quality gas, and occasionally do from two places local to me. Another interesting fact is that the cost of the surplus petrol will fluctuate depending on the amount of surplus. So, with a big surplus, independents pay less, charge less, and therefore offer a better deal. But, when a refinery's surplus is low or nil, cost to independents rises and with supply and demand, the Independent-Joes's price will be higher than the name brand across the street. Whether you use Indepentent-Joe's gas or not, use this as a market indicator. If you see this trend in your geographic region, the price at name brand gas stations will rise in the next 1-6 days.

2) Since I only use 91 octane in my FX, I only buy from highly trafficed gas stations. A less popular station, or maybe even one in certain economic regions, will sell a lesser quantity of premium fuel. With less turnover, you increase your chance of buying stale fuel. Gas does go bad over time and I don't want old gas. This is obviously more of a critical point during major price hikes or rural stations off the beaten path.

Okay, way too much nerdy knowledge here. Sorry to bore you. Fuel and cars are just my thing though. I gonna go have a beer.

Buy USA?

I almost alway's use Shell Premium because we have few other acceptable options up here in Big Bear but after reading the info below about where the oil comes from I am thinking maybe a change is in order. Any recomendations on any of the companies that do not use foreign oil?

Here are some large companies that DO NOT import Middle Eastern oil:
Sunoco……………………..0 barrels
Conoco…………………….0 barrels
0ASinclair…………………..0 barrels
BP / Phillips……………. 0 barrels
Hess…………………………0 barrels
ARC0……………………….0 barrels
Maverick…………………..0 barrels
Flying J……………………0 barrels
Valero……………………..0 barrels
Murphy Oil USA…… *0 barrels

Here are the ones that DO!
Shell………………………………. 205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco………………… 144,332,000 barrels
Exxon /Mobil……………………. 130,082,000 barrels
Marathon/Speedway………….. 117,740,000 barrels
Amoco……………………………. 62,231,000 barrels

And CITGO oil is imported from Venezuela by Dictator Hugo Chavez who hates America and openly avows our economic destruction! (We pay Chavez’s regime nearly $10 Billion per year in oil revenues!)

The U.S. currently imports 5,517,000 barrels of crude oil per day from OPEC. If you do the math at $100 per barrel, that’s over $550 million PER DAY ($200 BILLION per year!) handed over to OPEC, many of whose members are our confirmed enemies!!!!! It won’t stop here – oil prices could go to $200 a barrel or higher if we keep buying their product.

Some more info on gas---

The United States Environmental Protection Agency -(EPA) introduced the minimum gasoline detergent standard 1 in 1995 and soon after most gasoline marketers who had previously provided higher levels of detergents reduced the concentration level of detergents in commercial gasoline to meet the new standard. Whether the higher detergent levels were necessary remains disputed. The levels required are necessary to meet emissions standards but not engine longevity standards.
In 2004 BMW -joined the consortium in 2007.
Gas brands can participate and get Top Tier listing if they meet certain standards.

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline Retailers
Gasoline retailers must meet the high TOP TIER standards with all grades of gasoline to be approved by the automakers as providing TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline.
In addition, all gasoline outlets carrying the brand of the approved retailer must meet the TOP TIER standards.
Additional gasoline retailers are added to the TOP TIER list as they meet the standards. The retailers known to be on the TOP TIER list are shown below.

Fantastic information from the Mountain Man! Is't good to know what's going on in the world petroleum market.

Many years ago, when I was more into hot rodding, my friends would all buy their race gas from the local airport. At least back then, it was high octane and the added antifreeze for aircraft never affected automobile preformance or engine longevity. I don't know what has changed in the last 15 years for aircraft fuel. The drawback was that you couldn't drive your car on the tarmac to the fuel, so gas cans were lugged. (Find a small airport with an short lugging distance.) If you go through the burden, you'll get high octane at half the price of street pumps selling race fuel at super inflated prices.

where's Costco gas? :tongue (2):
According to COSTCO they buy only Top Teir Gas from various companies that are top tier suppliers--Wherever they can get the best prices.

---------- Post added at 02:19 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:06 PM ----------

On a side note I make it a practice to never buy gas at a station where I see a tanker truck fueling the Station because if there is any crap in their tanks at all it would be stirred up and your risk of getting some contaminated fuel is greater.
Also it is recomended to get your fuel when it's cooler outside like first thing in the morning as there is less expansion of the fuel so you should get a little more fore your money.
Also putting the fill nozzle on the highest flow setting will cause more vapors to be retreived from your tank while fueling so using a slower feed into tank will give you a little more for your money as well.
Keeping your tank full also helps as this wiil have less room in your tank for vapors that evaporate t0 accumulate in tank.

The fuel is metered at the pump, and the customer is charged by the "gallon". Fuel expanding in the vehicle's tank won't affect the price you pay per gallon.

So many myths around the subject of gas.
It's all BS, & probably all comes from the same sources.
One thing we all know for certain is that Microsoft sucks balls. Go KIN!
